I have a Mig Set, a Buzz box stick set and an oil cooled Oxford, but still wondering which maker to go for with an Inverter stick welder, about 200A, to be mainly used on 240v but if it is dual voltage all the better...
As much as people don't like them I bought a Giant 200amp MMA/TIG inverter for £160. I can't rate the TIG function as I havnt got round to it but the arc mode is top notch. I must admit, when using it I am almost expecting it to go 'pop' at any stage but it doesn't it keeps on laying beads and starts really easily.
IT do have backup stick welders just in case but until it breaks I'll keep on using it and for £160 it has more than paid for itself
I have just bought a parweld xti 160 from weldequip and must say the build quality is really good and the machine performs great. Much better than a clarke inverter which i was going to buy.
My company bought me a clarke 140amp inverter for site use due to it being lightweight and having a shoulder strap,
Had it about 12years now and cannot fault it.
These machines are much of a muchness. You can find them in lots of different colours and brands.......Google Esab Buddy Arc 200 or maybe even Thermal Arc.
None of them state suitable larger electrode use than 4mm anyway, so maybe worth looking at a 150-160? If you have your heart set on that 200 amp one, them maybe worth seeing if anyone does a longer than 12mth warranty as with the one you linked too.
What are you looking for in an inverter anyway, considering that you have an Oxford and a buzz-box? Portability to the extent of climbing ladders with it, portability to the extent of putting it in the van. 110V operation? Just fancy having one? TIG?
I just wanted 200 amp as I will only ever want to weld heavier stock and it seems advisable to cover all posibilities to me. I also thought at lower amps they may have a better duty cycle too, for 3.2 rods etc, maybe this is not the case?
Why do I want one, the Buzz Box is portable to a degree, but it is not something you want to be carrying round a site, or round a farm for too long, they get really rather heavy! I can then use up the ladder, in the cow sheds on the shoulder strap instead of in the slurry.... It just seems to make sense..
I have seen a few that run 200a on a 240v 16amp supply, so there are the machines out there, I just can't decide on which to go for! lol
You want an inverter which must be small and light enough to use slung over your shoulder to use up ladders and up to your ankles in slurry - weighs 5Kg say. It must go up to 200A. You'd prefer it to be dual voltage. Obviously you want it to come from a good maker with duty cycles honestly stated and a decent guarantee they're likely to live up to.
That must cut down the number of possibilities quite a bit.
It's been commented on before and I recall people thought they were good. Try the search facility.
They only have 1.5 metre welding leads, which is a pain for an inverter for general use, but an advantage if you are mainly going to use it slung over your shoulder. Good duty cycle but only one year warranty even though it has 10 years spares support.
Weldequip and Tec-Arc are generally thought to be reliable suppliers not noted for selling rubbish.
