Inverter drive for pillar drill

I've just got hold of a 3ph Gima p12 pillar drill.
The only problem is i only have 1ph available.
The drill has the motor built in so i'm not too keen on swaping motors.

I've read a bit about inverters on here and think it's the only way to go about it.

I'm not into electrickery at all so could do with some advice on what i would need to buy to get it up and running.

A couple of pics of data plates etc.
At the bottom of the data plate it's a bit unclear but says 2.5A
The only gears that came with it are 52/23

you need to find the box where the wires go into the motor and have a look at the wiring setup. If you're lucky there will be six wires coming out of the motor body into the terminal box. If so, you can change the motor wiring to delta and run it using a cheap inverter that converts 240 single phase to 240 3 phase. If theres only 3 wires, then you are going to need a (more expensive) inverter that includes a transformer to bump the voltage to 415.

I'll have to whip a couple of covers off and see how many wires are coming off the motor.

As above, that rating plate indicates that you'll probably find a single set of terminals. If you've got all six you'll be in luck.

You could run it on 230v 3ph, but only to about 27 Hz without running out of volts.

We've run 400v/3ph inverters off a single phase 230-400v transformer, but it won't do the input rectifiers or caps a whole load of good, if you try and run the inverter at rated.

its 400v an old one . more than likely only 3 wires out of motor so its either a 415v converter or get the motor taken in and have it altered to run on 240v 3phase and get an inverter

Could turn out a bit of a pain to try and run it of an inverter.

I had a chat with the electrician in work tonight and he thinks if i whip the motor out one of his suppliers would be able to match it up to something physicaly the same size in 240v.

If that isn't possible i might just bodge a 240v motor onto the top or side....would be nice to get it inside the casing though where it's supposed to be.

The motor is sort of built into the main casting .......but it does have six wires coming out of it which come straight from the motor windings.

That looks like it's wired Star - the choc block being the star point. It looks like the switch connect the other 3 legs to the supply.

You should be able to wire it Delta and run it off 230v.

I should add, Inverters subject the windings to HF pulses that normal mains does not. This can cause issues with the insulation on old motors. Yours looks pretty old, so I wouldn't rule out fitting an inverter causing accelerated degradation of the insulation.

Thanks for the info.....think i've got my head round it now.

If i check the continuity between the ends of the various wires i can find each end of the 3 windings.....connect them up in delta and run these via an inverter that gives 240v 3 ph.

Yup

A single phase 230v in, 3 phase 230v out inverter will be much cheaper than one that includes a transformer.

In choosing the windings for delta configuration?

The important thing is to make sure you don't connect a winding to itself. As long as you don't do that, any other configuration will just change the direction of rotation.

I knew reversing two of the phases would reverse it, but wasn't certain about reversing just one of the windings.

Ahh, as above, changing just one winding end-for-end as such will have no effect.

I wondered whether it might slow the motor down because one winding would be working against the other two instead of with it.
