Last time I checked mine it made me realise I had a dodgy cable from the cable modem to the router as my tested speed was ~95Mbps (vs the 218 I get testing normally). Checked on the router and the WAN interface had dropped down to 100baseT! Replaced the cable and it jumped back to 1000baseT and >200Mbps.

4g internet Sim card thingy, it was amazing 5 years ago, now's it just mediocre, if the local village fills with grokels it a nightlight with no internet access till they all go home.

I use a 4G router for simplicity. Not tied into any contract, no line rental etc., & it's plenty fast enough for my use.
Im on a unlimited data contract with 3 and have that sim in a mobile broadband router, works well enough for me. 12 months contract at £15 a month, it'll do me fine for general browsing and streaming...... this version of "dial-up" is a bit faster that the old days of freeserve etc

Similar here. I'm on the 3 network, but via Smarty. Unlimited data. Compared to the dial-up days, the speeds we have now are bloody awesome.

Il then use BT's speed test and magically it speeds up.

Noticed the same issue with slow speeds then suddenly back to normal after a test when we were with BT. We are lucky here, just had fibre to the property installed across the city. New supplier (who actually have offices and customer support right here in the city!) 500-520mb all day, only had one outage (about 24hrs) when an upgrade to the local infrastructure went wrong. Next day had an email with a £15 voucher for a local bakery.

In my case a test on Ookla shoes slow. A bt test it suddenly speeds up. Then an Ookla test shows the faster speed too. Almost as if bt go oh crap they've noticed and remove the throttling.I've definitely had a similar thing. Ours is slow at the best of times, but does occasionally improve after doing a speed test. And yes the BT test always shows fasters speeds ....

I'm paying £10.43 for 20Gb/month on Three, and I've just had a letter telling me that they can't continue my tariff, so it'll either be £22/month to continue my current rolling contract, £16/month for the same on a 2-year contract, or £18 for 40Gb on the same 2-year contract. The fact that they don't mention the deal on their web site that would give me unlimited data for £14, combined with the 9Mbps download speed that I get only if I lean the device against an open window (which is not fun this time of year), means I'm probably just going to go for a basic fibre package. I can't have ultra-fast, they've been digging pavements up but the FTTP isn't ready yet, and Three aren't giving me much time to decide.
I remember it was you that mentioned the above deal before when it came up, and if the performance was better I might go for it. But the performance is sometimes terrible, it's never into double figures, and most of the reason that I was using mobile has gone away now.
In all honesty I was going to go for a fibre connection at the end of my Three contract (last December) but it's only lethargy that has stopped me doing anything about it, mainly because I know this deal I'm on now is the cheapest "broadband" around, and once I cancel I won't get the price back. But as the price is going anyway, that's spurring me into action.

My friend's broadband was extremely slow and I told him to do a speed test which came out below 1mb. He was on EE at the time and rang the help line to ask what was wrong. The girl on the phone said it was probably due to the distance from the exchange and he replied I could throw a brick through the window from here. 10 minutes later it was up to 10mb.
