works the same as a freewheel on a bicycle if the car slows down suddenly the inersia of the alternator allows it to over run --less strain on belts etc, so it only realy drives in one direction, it freewheels in the other
In reverse of course the engine runs the same way as forward so the alternator freewheel pulley is not affected.
