Interesting VFD on Kickstarter

I was having a look through Kickstarter and stumbled across a guy looking to solve the VFD problem often encountered by hobbyists.

Not much use in the UK, as he is on about 110V supplies, you could probably run an EU spec (UK & mainland Europe), 3ph 3kW motor from a single phase UK domestic supply quite economically with current equipment and products on the open market TBH.
In fact you can have a 3kW motor on single phase in the UK and run it off a 13A plug just about.
If you need variable speed, then there are loads of options.

I think he's producing a motor control to run off 110 or 220v single phase to drive up to 3kw 3 phase motor. I'm not sure of the options available to do this commercially and at what costs, but I assume he's done his homework and intends to make it competitive.
Not sure about the funding though, too many scams out there.

Kickstarter holds the money up until funding is reached. only then is it released to the project runner. If it doesn't hit funding then all money is returned. I've not heard of any horror stories via that platform yet. I personally know people that have backed projects that have been both successful and unsuccessful with no isses on eiher the refund or delivery side.

I have a Chinese made 4hp/3KW, 220V in and 3x220V out VFD that sells for £108 including postage, can't see how a small operation can compete with that!

Standard industrial inverters are available for 1ph 230V supply, 3ph 230V output, which is fine for UK/European use.
