Interconnecting cables

Oki-doki. Any clues as to who might sell me a set of interconnecting cables? I've searched high and low and can't find anyone.

Actually I lie, sort of. I did pop into my local supplier (to get a bottle refill actually only to find they are no longer AP agents an no one bothered to tell me but that's another story!) who could sell me the 70mm cable. Two problems with this: a) the cable he had was really stiff in comparison to mine, which is branded Elandflex and b) he didn't have what I call the control cable i.e the one with lots of wires in that does the feed speed etc. Oh, and he wanted £9.70 ex. VAT per meter which seemed a bit steep!

Anyway, having drawn a blank there I turned to t'internet and tried the makers of my current cables, Eland. No response. I get really peeved when companies don't respond to emails. Do the want my business or not?

So I'm hoping that some bright spark round here will know exactly where I can find some. And roughly how much per meter or for 15m if someone has any idea.

Try any electrical wholesalers City Electrical etc and ask for tri-rated cable, that's the flexible stuff you need, also ask for any lugs / crimping tools you may need.

Try to sound as though you are in the electrical trade or they WILL try to charge you list price.

Wilts Wholesale also do tri-rated up to 70mm2 Archie, no idea of price but they're usually very good. Not sure if there's a branch near you though.
Tbh, probably any decent electrical factor will stock it.
Edit: Nearest Wilts to you might be Rugby?

Thanks lads. I did ask CEF and their prices for the tri-rated (or whatever it was I asked them about) weren't too bad. Does anyone have any ideas about the multi-core? I'd really like to find somewhere that'll do the lot!

I assume your plugs are okay Archie? They are different from machine to machine.

How many core do you need? If you dont need the fittings, just get some XX core from Wilts/Edmunson etc...

Yeah the plugs are fine. I'll just hoik them off the cables I've got as and when. Well cheers, Hitch. I'll count up the cores I need and go shopping. Out of interest though, is there somewhere I could get the whole lot made up?

iam needing extra long cables soon i found them on flee-bay , you can buy the cable any length you want then buy the plugs make them up yourself hope this helps.

If you want flexible control (multicore) cable go for YY but it only has PVC sheath, if you want more mechanical protection (slightly stiffer) ask for SY cable, this has a metal braid with clear PVC sheath over.

Out of interest though, is there somewhere I could get the whole lot made up?

What length you want em...5,10,15,20 Metre? 3 core, 4 core or 5 core electrical cable? 25, 35, 50 or 70mm welding cable? Sheathed or un-sheathed? Plugs fitted or un-fitted?

I had a poke around eBay but couldn't find any cables of 70mm CSA. Several plugs to suit though.

Handy info, robotstar. I'll bear that in mind when I nip to CEF.

Weldequip, nice of you to drop in! My plan is to put a socket on the wfu into which the existing earth cable I have would go and run a cable from the socket back to the transformer. In which case I am basically looking for two 15m lengths of 70mm cable and a 15m length of conrol cable and hose. The hose and control fittings I can jack off the existing ones and likewise with one of the other wires so I would need one male twist fitting and one panel mount female twist fitting. I'm afraid k don know how many cores the control cable is. I'll have to count on Friday.

Well I shall now submit my report. I am the very happy new owner of several miles of second hand leads which I got from the same place I bought the welder in the first place: Westermans. I nipped up there this time instead of dealing over email and I'm glad I did. What a toy shop! I spent half an hour oggling all the expensive looking kit they had and left several shades greener than when I arrived! Anyway, I've said before how helpful they are and yet again they were. I got the whole lot, fittings, hose, multi-core and 70mm, for far less than the 70mm alone would have cost me new. Needless to say I'm well 'appy so if you read this Craig, thanks again!

how much did it cost you ?

Around about 100 smackers for near enough exactly the length I wanted plus a bit. Apparently most of the old cable is chopped in for scrap and they supply all the cables new! Postage would have been between £25 and £40 (probably closer to £40) but luckily it's close enough for me to collect. If you're very lucky you might get a multicore with the right ends. I forgot to check which mine had and ended up changing them over when I got home which is a pain in the deriere!
