Insurance quotes are about £5000! any recommendations?
Its a 52 plate Diesel Polo, I have looked at swapping it for a Yaris as its a low insurance group but its the same cost.
Cheapest Quote is £3600 with a box and Curfews no driving between 23.00-05.00.
Any thoughts on these that give you a new car with insurance for £X a month?

How old is he as that is a big factor. £3600 for a sub 20 year old on low group vehicle is about right based on what I hear other people have paid. One neighbour let her son insurer her car on his own policy. He reversed into a post a couple of days after passing his test and wrote the car off. He has now been told that he has to wait 2 years before anyone will consider insuring him again.

Done that thats how we got it to £3600

This worked for us too, but a couple of years later she saved £100 on her renewal by removing them again, so keep an eye on that as well.

When my youngest sister started to drive it was the same. She had a 1 ltr 3cyl corsa
The fact that it was a 3 door hatch was a big contributor to the cost regardless of engine size. She put alsorts of vehicles into comparason sites and 4 door cars were coming out a big% cheaper even with more powerful engines.
Some companies allow named drivers to earn there own no claims so it may well be worth building a year or two as a named driver on it before going all in as the only driver.

I was joined to my dads policy so drove that vehicle instead was a cheaper option than having my own insurance thats at 25 to pass its a 1,000 for me now to get reinsured at 46 as im classed as a single person even though i care for 2 children

would it be cheaper to get a second car policy and tack them onto it ?

Those boxes are a rip off. My son enqired about a policy with one fitted*, they wanted 2800 for a 12yrs old polo, he got it for 1175 with me as named driver in the end.

Have you considered third party only on a cheapy? He really needs a policy in his own name to earn a no-claims discount.

Where are you getting quotes from? I was quoted £700 on confused.com, got cover for £194 by going straight to the same company.

my lad is 17 and taking his test in Jan so this is interesting too, we did get a quote from compare the doodaa [other insurance sites are available] for him to drive my 2003 1.6 Hyundai coupe, which we was shocked how cheap it was, £400 he will be 18 in February.

when I passed my test, I put my car (1litre fiesta) in my dad's name, with him as the main driver and me as a named driver on the insurance

a little bit naughty, but brought the price right down


charing young drivers a packet for insurance is a con, (my uncle used to work insurance) cost wise, in a cheap car, they're no more at risk as a group than most other groups (older people)

SWMBO has dealt with all the kids first time insurances and has just kept adding to a multicar system with a protected no claims scheme, its around £800 per car without any restrictions. Its worked out well because all of the boys have managed to total at least one car within the first eighteen months of driving ( nobs ), strange that because my daughters have still got their first cars .

Change your address would be the easiest way to bring the price down. My grand daughter was paying around £1000 on her Ka where she lived in Derbyshire. She got a job and moved to Birkenhead and now pays double.

Having a policy in parents name with child / younger driver named when it's really a way of getting cheap insurance for them is classed as insurance fraud known as "Fronting". If caught the named driver, as well as the parent get prosecuted, for no insurance as policy isn't honoured by companies and both parties get points on licence. New drivers get an automatic ban, have to take an extended test after ban and will have difficulty getting insurance in the future with having a record for fraud.

Yep - was a known problem back in late '80's when I was shopping around in my late teens to get cheaper insurance.

Thing to watch with new cars with insurance included - what will the insurance be like next year without the included insurance, on a one year old car.

Insurance companies need to know the truth for sure, the multicar insurances will still add a car with teenager as a named and main driver. The discount is worth having and the accrued NCD goes towards their own policy when they get to go it alone.

obviously depends on the specific policies but we had a transit on a company policy which said any driver.

I checked with the broker and they said that I was correct in that there were no age restrictions so my boys learnt to drive in the transit and used it for some time after passing their tests

used to have any driver insurance on my work vans, but the prices got silly - too many drunk drivers etc.. using it so they didn't have to be named on the polocy
