it pays to shop every year . 3 years ago got a decent price for van insurance last year it went up by 60 quid so went to another insurance agent and got the same cover same insurance company 50 quid cheaper its due shortly and they want £ 228 and last year it was £174 I told them il shop round and they said nothing . I can get same cover with another agent for £185 so check every year make sure your not getting stitched up

I have been with Hastings for 4 years, every year they put it up and every year I do a Go Compare and the cheapest is Hastings.

I phone them with the quote from Go Compare and they match it, really I should be annoyed that they try to raise it but they were great when I had a claim so as long as I can drop their renewal price it does me.

Dont they have to show what your last premium was now. That'll be interesting, whatever I pay it always gets bumped up to 220quid, last yr it cost me less than 60quid, so it will be interesting to see how much they quote this August

Last December I changed my 4x4 & I paid £20 to changeover vehicle, so far so good & a not too a erroneous fee.
My annual renewal fell due last week & the premium jumped from £246 to £354 for the admittedly brand new replacement.
As in previous years I went on a comparison website & was quoted £324 for the same cover. Armed with this information I went back to my existing insurer & the they suddenly managed to reduce my premium to £313.
What is so surprising about this event is that I have done exactly the same every year for the last six years. Moral of the tale is don't take your new insurance quotation as set in stone, haggle & if they don't play ball then consider changing your insurer.

My L200 insurance dropped when I went from a Y reg to a 54 plate. We have just altered our car insurance due to changing cars. The Zafira, 57 plate was costing us £160ish, phoned to change over to the Golf, 16 plate, £180. I asked if that was for the remainder of the year and they said no that is the yearly cost. So how come a nearly new car can only be £20 more. Not complaining just find it hard to understand how it all works.

I've been with Aviva for years, it's gone up by a fair bit every year and I've let it slide because i simply can't be bothered to shop around. I Should do really, I know I'm paying over the odds.

Slightly off-topic but the strange thing is I've just swapped cars from a 2004 diesel Audi A4 Avant to a 2010 ummmmm...."hot hatch" (midlife crisis #2 ) and they didn't want any more money.

No real rhyme or reason but apparently high price for old cars is people take less care and crash and scratch them easier......allegedly. lol

Me and the better half have both been with General Accident for the past 4 years, premium for both has hardly changed in that time, in fact I think it may have actually come down due to paying direct online
Both 3 litre Subarus and I was £145 and she was £152 and the crazy thing is mine is for business use and hers is not.
Swapped out her insurance for a much newer and higher value Audi A1 and no charge, I now have her Subaru and again no charge to change.
Will see what the renewals are this time, mine is due in a couple of months.

In the past when we have got renewals in and they had increased drastically I have gone online and got quotes, when phoning to cancel they always ask why and I say got it cheaper, they say we can maybe do it cheaper and I say you had your chance when you sent me the renewal, cheerio!

My renewal with Adrian Flux on my "leisure" van was actually 19% cheaper this year. Never , ever had that happen.
Was a bit peeved when they asked for proof of no claims though....ahem...I've been with you for 3 years

When I moved up here I still had the bike, brand new Fazer. In Dumfries and Galloway it cost me £330 to insure when I phoned up after we moved here the premium doubled. I asked why and got told because of my postcode. It's a Paisley post code, I live a hundred forty miles from there though. Yes sir we know. Phoned around insurance companies and they were all pretty much the same price and excuses

Considering the new cars value is £32000 compared to approx £6000 for the 9 year old vehicle I traded in & ergo the insurers financial liability has gone up by a factor of nearly 550% an increase in premium of 27% is my eyes not unreasonable & consireably better than the first quote.

I have been with them for several years too.

Every year I check with compare themeerkat or whatever and the best I've had has been about £10 less from an outfit I've never heard of, so I stay with them.

I do it all on-line.

One very useful feature of Aviva (Norwich Union) policies for me is that their Driving Other Cars 3rd party cover does not require the other car to be insured. I have used this a few times to take various cars to and from MoT tests, test drive or 'exercise' cars one or other of the offspring have left for minor repair or temporarily stored on my drive.

I check with them every time that this still applies just in case they remove it! Most others require the car to be insured by others - if the offer the DOC clause at all.

The new continuous insurance requirement might make this less useful in future.

Another company with a neat extra is Saga. If you 'feel unable to continue your journey' ANYONE with a full driving license can chauffeur you. I checked - it need not be a formal medical condition - feeling tired is enough. (but not 'tired and emotional', a reference those of us old enough to qualify for Saga insurance will remember!).

The policyholder must be in the vehicle, hence chauffeur.

In practice it would have enabled youngest son - under 21 - to chauffeur us around in the Jaguar whenever we were traveling 'en famille'. He would otherwise be uninsurable on that vehicle due to the huge premium.

They were more expensive than Aviva though, and as he was only with us for a few months between university and work, the Aviva DOC clause was more valuable anyway.

That's understandable, but then my insurance for a wreck of an astra van worth 500quid cost me 280quid. The defender before that (£7k) cost 47quid and now the gmc (17.5k) about the same. Both on agreed valuation.
