as above congrats on the passing test

with my kids we looked for whats about car wise and then done go compaire search etc to see what ones are the best prices and then made a short list of the cars he could afford the insurance for and then wittled down what was the best cars out the bunch to go look at


im sure hes desprate to get on the road but hopfully he will heed your words that rushing to buy a car yesterday/first one he sees will end costing him a packet

I'm with Sheila's Wheels and last time I checked I'm not a girlie Even on renewal they were still the cheapest quote I got, only went up about £35. As for new drivers just got to take the hit and run something unpopular with the speed merchants, povvo spec and low on the thieves lists.

I've been with Sheilas wheels for quite a few years and found they are competetive at renewal time, just waiting to see if there's a big hike this year the same as other companies.

Go buy him a jag or a Volvo… cheaper to insure than a fiesta or any other little car.

That's why back in the day all three of my boys drove 10 year old Rover 820s.

Being over 10 years old seemed to make a difference too.

Be careful adding yourself as a named driver - for MX-5s and Bikes trying to add me increased the premium for my boys!

Edit: it actually made them popular with their female fellow students as there was lots of room and, for the day, lots of toys.

Also check multi-car options. Whilst the premium for my Jaguar nearly doubled, in combination with the Rover the multi-car was almost half the next best separate policies.

A lot depends on where you live. 19 year old son has a Seat something or other, sporty little thing. It’s not too bad for him to insure compared to what some of his college pals pay.

As for spending, it's a Fiat and I've already done more work on this car that his brothers Toyota Aygo has had in the last two years!


To be fair the Aygo was a 1 lady owner with 35k on the clock, the Fiat has 91k with no history...

It does not surprise me. They simply don't actually want any high risk business.

The company who insures my sons GTR have told him they won't renew it as the underwriting insurer has stopped trading.

Things may have changed since way back when but, when I got my first car at ~19, I got something that could be insured on a classic policy. Under 25s insurance wasn't the insanity it is now but was still prohibitive.

The old car taught me a lot and was very cheap motoring.

Don't acru NCD on a classic policy but post 25, the age and experience are worth a lot of reductions (or, were)

Lots of safe, sensible "classic" options now, Volvo 240? VW Jetta? MK2 polo etc.

But beware if its a phone tracker if you phone is not connected they say your not insured Bluetooth version so if it failed to connect so say your not insured

For my sons first year only way he could get insurance

And that was on a 1.1 car was 1000 quid and 200 ish a month and that was 5 years ago

Try your own insurer to see if they give any discount for family loyalty. My insurer of 20+ years is NFU so when my son had his first car I asked them to give a quote in my sons own name with me and my wife as named drivers. My son was still living (and still does) at home with us. Result was a very competitive quote even for first year.

Vehicle prices are silly. My nice old Skoda snapped a trailing arm & goosed the suffrage last Monday - so I've been looking for a cheap runabout (don't want anything too precious with tools & muddy boots etc).
Even deeply unsexy utilitarian stuff is daft money, often with starship miles & iffy history. In a world awash with used cars you'd think they'd be bargains - but no.
I was seeking a small-ish practical petrol with some load space (usual suspects of Panda, Doblo, Berlingo - & just missed out on a really tidy low miles Nissan Note 1.6L for £2k).... but my daughters OH is a Postie & has turned up an 06 Diesel Fiesta Van with mot till late Nov '24 for £500. Pics he took look OK, mot history nothing awful, so I'm off to see it in the morning. It'd do what I need from a runabout atm.

My daughter passed a few months ago , 17 years old , with a seat Leon , nearly 2.5k … black box , otherwise it would have been more that 3.5k …

One word of warning , follow the letters to the T with the black box , don’t unplug it , it knows when it’s been removed , and knows the extra mileage appearing , one of her friends found out the hard way , even after 2 warnings , got his policy cancelled in the first year , and now is paying over 5k …..

It sucks to be young now driving but it’s only for a couple of years …

Also ask the insurance companies what are the cheapest cars … the best was a ford KA-rap ….

My lad's expecting £3000 when he's passed his test later this year, it's a **** take really.

His mate has a "black box" but gets penalised for long journeys (30miles +) so what's the use in having a bloomin car at that point.
