Insulated panels

I’m in the process of putting up a steel framed workshop, I’m having a fibreglass insulated roof put on it and was thinking of going down the route of using insulated panels for the walls, can anyone recommend any or somewhere they sell slight seconds etc? Thanks Ross

they were crazy money , about a year ago it was working out cheaper to spray foam ,,, Im looking into using the multilayer roof felt at the moment as an alternative ,, just a thought.

Demo firms often list them on ebay. Former boss bort several Lorrie loads. Just make sure the building they came off is taller than yours as the ends where always damaged

I used a firm called Seconds & Co when I built my house. They are in Wales but will deliver to all uk. They do seconds in Kingspan and other boards that do not meet full spec and they were much cheaper than the local builders merchants.

Yep its not always the magic bullet it was once advertised as.

my neighbour has it and to be fair no problems yet but with a system like that you don't know there is a problem till it's fallen down on top of your car after a foot of snow

Ive seen lots of videos about houses with loft issues ,, not so many tin sheds though , but its pricey too these days , at least with a bit of kingspan you can go trouble shooting ,, the multi layer foil breathable membrane looks interesting , but obviously it will have no added security value , Im only looking to do walls and roof on my own new workshop so its small scale ,,

I was getting about 20% saving over insulated panels , and working out about the same as using kingspan in sheets ,,, I do like the foam idea ,, and Ive been in a couple of workshops done with it , and its been a great job . ... [ so far ].

I couldnt find anywhere selling the proper kingspan locally, it was all EPS foam, and bloody expensive, while also reasonably flammable. Either type if you have a hot fire, the fumes will be nasty.

Our uncle had a spare roll of rock/mineral wool from his extension, which Id say a much better and cheaper choice. Also generally thicker, so you get a lot more insulation, if you have the space for it.

Probably irrelevant to this thread but I’ll chuck it out there as it may help someone, there was a feature on radio 4 the other day that surveyors are giving very low value to houses with spray foam now. One bloke claimed his was valued at £0!

Can’t remember why. I think it’s to do with the inability to inspect what it’s sprayed on and therefore liability.

I have dealt with a few sold/ for sale houses where they are ripping the roof off due to sprayfoam
about half of them have rotten timbers,

That's the problem with spray foam. If you're buying somewhere that has it installed, you don't know if it was installed by Desperate Dan and his mates or a weekend have-a-go hero who's hired the kit. Either way, when it's done poorly without adequate care it's asking for problems and insurance companies will never be keen to pay for the cost of replacing an entire roof structure...£££££££££££££

The panels I've used where a lot more serious than some spray foam on the back of a piece of tin. These where kingspan type material completely inside a metal box. With tongue and groove a each side. And the guage of metal used is substantially thicker than a box profile profile sheet.

At 6m it works out a fair wedge cheaper than new kingspan sheets

More often than not it was applied to an already failing or leaking roof or loose slates etc. and has been destined to fail from day one.

Properly applied to steel sheet there should be no issues as there shouldn’t be any opportunity for moisture ingress … again the issues arise with poor prep, old or already damaged surface finishes

as brad has already said there is an issue with foam as well as kingspan and you dont know you have an issue until its too late

you can have a leak in the felt can be leaking a long while but with an 8ft sheet length it can be at the top of it your sides are sealed and taped up your not going to know that you have an issue until its too late or something gives or fails

at least with fibreglass you get an early enough warning that you have an issue and it can be sorted

the new style insulation is the same issue 4-6" insulation slotted inbetwen them an over lap of 1-2" over board before you even plaster board it and thats in houses being fitted out for the last 5-10 years miht insulate your roof but your roof can fail due to the roof seal the breathable felt is the only thin that is protecting you and we dont know enough about that felt compared to the old bitumen felt or even a roof without any felt at all

old felt is a sore point at the moment ,,, second house roof that needs refelting this year ,,, half the roof has rotten felt crumbling , other half i like new ,,, ah well ,, keeps the tax bill down .
