I went in and spoke to one guy there and asked him what gas i needed based on what i would be welding, TIG welding, 3-6mm mild steel, with the occasional bit of aluminium and stainless. Was told ArgoShield Universal for the steel, and pure argon for Aluminium.

If you'd said MIG, that would have been nearly right (although it should have been Argoshield light for stainless). Honestly, where do BOC get their salesfolk? Was he hard of hearing as well as being ignorant?

dont they have a chart on the wall (they do in my local place) that tells you what gas does what? i thought they would all have em just to make sure, i think i have even been sent one in the post by them a couple of times

Went back today, told the guy there what happened and he exchanged the tank for one of PureShield Argon instead, at no charge. Happy with that now, just glad to have the right stuff, ready for some more practice. (Just need the time and energy for that now!)

nodeward - I don't know to be honest, i didn't see one there. Will enquire about that next time i go there.

when i had small cylinders of argoshield years ago they had a collar around the top with info about the gas and what it was for.

These don't. Just various vague details and stuff like "Property of BOC" or "Do not breathe gas".

Glad to say that with the new correct gas, i fired up the machine today to repair a broken Clutch bearing fork and linkage for a friend's van. Worked flawlessly and the welds came out much better than expected. It's all starting to fall into place now!
