Ink jet or Laser?

Need a new printer again.

Whats the one to get, Ink or laser? Is there a third way?
Only really need to print invoices,Ground plans,Drawings, that kind of thing, Not really interested in this 3 in 1 lark, But if it comes attached thats ok.

Budget- £0 - £150ish, Perhaps more.

Seems that speed is going to be the main factor for you're intended use, so thats laser then !

I've got a basic Samsung laser, (ML 1520) and it's been great. I wouldn't touch inkjet again, much more expensive to run.

A4 & if you dont need colour then laser every time.. another samsung here, cheap prints, inexpensive toner/drum units

Have a look on IJT Direct website. If you buy enough toner they give you a printer with it.

I had an inkjet for years. The official cartridges were fairly dear, about £17, refills never seemed to be much good. If you don't use them for a month or two the cartridges dry out.

I bought a Samsung monochrome laser for about £50. They come with a half-filled trial cartridge and a new full capacity one is £40 or £50 but you can buy toner on ebay etc and re-fill them yourself. £20 buys enough toner for about 6 refills. Refilling is a bit fiddly, but the refills work. The trial cartridges seem to go on for a long time with refills. Much better all round for my purposes.

I don't know about colour printing.

I certainly wouldn't go back to a mono inkjet. I formed the view that with chips in cartridges to make refills harder, inkjets were a finely tuned racket to gouge the customer.

Not the same as mine which is an ML-2240. They change the model every year or so.

Dell, Canon, Brother and others do mono lasers for about the same price.

Colour lasers start from not much more. I've never looked into them. If you haven't got to go for colour then why bother?

Inkjets are slow and expensive, they also clog up if you don't use them for a while and the way they unblock themselves is to spray more expensive ink out !
I bought my laser printer for £40 on offer, I've not needed to fill it with toner yet, 3-4 years later.

I'd never go back to an inkjet..

I have the best of both worlds, Windows copes with both printers, colour for pictures and Laser for black and white text, The speed and price per sheet is a no brainer, Laser every time for text.
Do a bit home work on laser cartridge price and even consider a s/h laser, I`m using a much older HP laserjet 5N I think it cost about £20, had it years now, repleced toner once with a copy type toner cartridge, I think I bought 3 on a deal and have 2 left, I`m sure you`d be talking thousands of sheets off a cartridge.

last time i bought a toner cartridge which was earlier this year for a brother laser the guy on the phone said yeah weve got one in stock £80, how much ill get back to you, i did some ringing round and he was right the cost of toner cartridges had gone up others were even more expensive. the previous cartridge was only £36 ish but saying that i think ive only bought 3 cartridges in around 8 years and i use it for invoicing, letters, job sheets infact everything black and white and it does get used alot so economy is excellent

The cartridge supplied with a printer usually has less toner in it than replacement cartridges.

On my Samsung it's possible to buy toner in bottles and refill the cartridge.

ive tried that and it does work initially but the print quality eventually goes and the paper turns light grey

Anyone using the CIFF type draught inks for inkjets? It's a set of larger reservoirs outside the printer with a ribbon pipe to the head.

I'm tempted but they don't seem to be available for domestic 3 in 1 machines?

A friend who does wedding photography uses one with 6 external reservoirs and gets good results

For anyone with an inkjet, I bough a kit of refill-it-yourself ink bottles from Tesco for about 6 quid I think. You get 3 bottles of black ink and a syringe to inject it into your cartridge. Works brilliantly - I've used half of one bottle so far and must have printed several cartridges-worth with it. It basically makes inkjet printing free - maybe a quid or two per year if you do quite a bit.

It's fantastic, very fast and wireless connection (as well as normal USB) so you connect it to the router and print from anywhere. Comes with a 1000-print toner and a 2500-print toner is only £60
