I got one of the Aldi special IR thermometers a couple of years back, it's rated to something like 560C but we have a furnace at work used for heat-treating small samples that runs at 900C and the Aldi thermometer picked it up fine.
I did a job a few years ago using a FLIR to check for hotspots in a process line; we 'practiced' how to use it by pointing it at the office staff to see which bits of them were hottest...
