Yes mate, I will use 2 blanking plates from a DAF truck transmission they are discarded when you bang a PTO on the gearbox.

Not daft at all
Strip the paint, cut out a pair of plates for them to sit on weld some channel to those plates.
Get some alloy plank hack it up so it looks like a 1-1/4" slab slip it into the channels and put some decorative rivets on the front.

I'll show the progress.
