I've done two motorcycles, both time I needed to have a valid MOT before I could start the process. They'd dropped the current insurance requirement when I did the second one last year. I found the whole process painless and easy, no snags anywhere.

Make sure you put an original fitment Kent engine and box in if you want to reinforce any claim for an age related classic car reg. Modify after the paperwork sorted.

The last one I did needed an mot with the application, the historic exemptions came after a trip to the post office with the first tax renewal, that couldn’t be done on line at the time.

I used to work for a car importer from australia and imported a beetle for myself, this was about 12 years back.Modified beetle had letter from vw confirming manufacture date, mot and insurance both on chassis number, inspection from dvla before reg number issued.

Doesn’t matter if its DVLA or an Approved Club. They will want to see pictures at least. You haven’t got a car, you have a shell, with no papers

Thats what I'm concerned about all I have is a shell with chassis number, vin plates and a nova certificate from hmrc to confirm all import duty has been payed

Although the V765 scheme is about reclaiming an original reg, I think you'll still need a declaration from a relevant V765 club rep to get it registered with an age related plate. The reps tend to want to see a complete(ish) unmodified car before they'll OK it to the DVLA.

This route to a registration is worth a read, used to register many vintage Specials which started out as a pile of bits; sign off is by a V765 rep as above, there isn't any DVLA etc. inspection.

Better start looking then A lot of clubs expect a car to be original and unmodified spec if they are going to put their name to it for a dating certificate. Fitting a Pinto etc into a standard Escort isn't going to pass off as original so you could end up with Q reg.

My 1956 vw beetle came to me as a unregistered car complete but with no engine or nova cert and was from sweden originally, i got a birth certificate from a vw club and after a bit of arguing the case i gained a nova cert even though the car had been in the UK unregistered for about 10 years after that i got it age related number but they sent a guy out from a company to verify it was real and had all the right numbers in the right place.

I'm guessing that you are building a rally or competition car? I would suggest that you contact a rally preparation company that specializes in Mk 2's. They source most of their shells in dry countries like Australia & they might be able to advise you of the best way to register it, especially if you suggest that you might buy some tuning goodies from them! You could also try some of the motorsport forums.

there isn't such a thing as a V5 here, if the car is registered i.e. road legal it would have the document for that but unregistered vehicles have sod all, they don't even have no plates as once the rego lapses 3 months you have to hand them in

They have rejected all the evidence (from owners club, factory records etc) until the car is totally finished and available for detail inspection (not mot)

Dont even think about it unless you have proof of all the components to rebuild it are appropriate age and spec to the car. They will want to see this evidence.
The nova declaration is also essential.
This was only a few months ago, they are getting unbelievably strict now.

It’s been like for sometime now. I imported my pickup 7 1/2 yrs ago. It was all changing then.

I did one two years ago, it was quite simple, nova, mot on chassis number, purchase receipt, proof of year, fill in the v55/5 and send off the fee It was the case that the mot negated the need for inspection but I believe they are now inspecting one in ten, the virus has probably knocked that on the head.If all the paperwork is in order I think they sail through, if questions need answering because it’s not all in order it’s going to be a slog because the file has landed on a chair polishers desk.
