I think the want of the project got you going about it the wrong way around, your first port of call should have been the place to keep the car. Then get the car and see what tools you need. I kinda got shafted on my first project too, was putting new outer arches and rear floor into a daihatsu fourtrak back in 2008 then I had to move out of my house because I got royally shat upon by the credit crunch and I didn't have a garage no more so the fourtrak went for scrap unfortunately as nobody would buy it. If you can store it reasonably dry under some sort of cover and even try to use some of the rust stopper stuff you may buy a little time to allow you to get a good place to work. And even more time to save for parts and panels. Sorry to hear you are having big issues before you start, I know how disheartening it is but it's great to see a young lad seeking for knowledge on working on that kind of car other than some tarted up 106 with a bean tin exhaust on it and less power than a good fart. Hope you get a place sorted. Try friendly farmers they may have a wee corner of a barn you could borrow

Turns out for my Birthday I had got a Halfords gift card or two, so I just went in for the plunge on their socket set. I won't lie: it was the lazy and easy approach to getting some sockets. At least now I can start collecting sockets!

I got some oil (£40 for 10 litres of 10w-40), axle stands (3 tonnes) and ... that's it.

So I still need to get some ramps, jack, plywood (that can come from a builder's yard, or if push came to shove, B&Q?) and an angle grinder + stuff. That way I can begin the easy tasks of clearing rusted sections, and polishing metal ready for welding.

Hopefully I'll be buying a MIG welder within 2 weeks. I might need to start a new thread because this has got somewhat derailed xD

EDIT: Any recommendations on penetrating / lubricating oil? I hear WD-40 is overrated for most jobs?

Halfords stuff is actually pretty decent, certainly up to the job of serious diy use and indeed I've used a set of their ratchet spanners for a number of years doing pretty intense industrial work - I'd get another set in a flash if I had to. Make sure you buy when things are on offer though - I find halfords a bit like Dfs in that their full price is not really that accurate, but their ever rotating sales are probably about right, you just have to wait until what you want is on offer.

For penetrating fluid the best off the shelf stuff I've used is called plus gas but I understand you can make your own using automatic transmission fluid and acetone? (but I've no experience of that) - a search on here will come up trumps I'm sure. Bog standard paraffin or diesel is cheap and can work wonders when left to do its magic for long enough.

As for car ramps, I think the car tyres are 225 (mm?) but that's wider than most ramps ... so ... err .... rightio then!

Just put the ramps central on the tyres, they won't fall off - well, my 245s never have

ramps isnt that important you can make do with just your axle stands for jack i still prefer the trolley jack bottle jack is ok but trolley jack is even better

car ramps just goto a car boot many still sell them there if youve got good ones around you then you might have to adapt them to make them longer 3x2s comes in handy but a offcut of a beam is much better to extend the ramp

ive also found some metal cutters so theyve been thrown in the box of tools as ive got a few pairs of them anyway still searching for more if i can find them out thats how much ive been upside down with the shed but getting there

if i find the other inspection lamp thats been sent up as well I know we had 2 of them

Here is the amusing part: Since I only have 12cm ground clearance, many trolley jacks won't fit under my car xD So I'm thinking of what to do. My mechanic guy said that it'd be preferable I move it as least as possible until the brakes are sorted. With ramps, I can do quite quite a few of the simple repairs I've been meaning to do for a while, and I leave the car where it is overnight. I'm not sure I'd feel so confident leaving a potentially very rusty car on axle stands.

It will be fine, compared to some restoration projects rust wise yours could be considered road worthy. Definitely not going to suffer from sitting on axle stands.

The important thing is to put the axle stands on a solid piece. Not a flimsy piec of body work.

Yup ... well I'm still alive: no injuries, and my car doesn't have axle stand through the floor.

I'll, therefore, assume none of you were wrong!

I even made a video which includes the scary moment!

With more and more trim coming out, I'm that one step closer to needing a MIG Welding machine. Eeeek!

Two observations from watching your video, Seb.

1) Get a longer handle for your trolley jack, it'll make life easier ,

and b) always check the tightness of/retighten the wheel studs after the weight of the car is off the jack.
