My advice, for what it's worth, go for it, if you never complete it, you will learn some useful skills for the next one. Sheet metal work, welding, bad language, setting fire to things & how to treat burns, just for a start. I'm assuming you didn't pay a lot for it, if so its probably worth more broken up for spares, so if you can't do it you won't lose a lot. Everybody has to start somewhere & the sense of achievement doing it is great.

True Cobbler, but I'm also not one to give up. So hopefully I can do this. As the big day nears (delivery) I'm feeling very anxious because I'm worried about how bad it's going to be.

And if that's not enough, I'm getting anxious because my friend who said that I could keep my car with is not responding, and the seller is not replying to my texts about the log book! Feeling pretty rotten and I need to revise for my GCSE exams! Gargh

GCSE's must come first, don't neglect them because of the car, that can wait a while if necessary. It may be difficult at times, but start on the easy bits & don't be afraid to ask for help if you need it.

Yeah true. I think I'll take a 5 minute walk and come back, close all the tabs to do with the car and hopefully I can forget about my anxiety for a few minutes so I can revise.

Posted. Anyway, here is a somewhat abstract question: for welding the floorpans, how much of the interior will need to be removed? Also does the metal itself get that hot? (Before you think "what a dumb <><>" at least for spot welding, does the metal have time to dissipate the heat so the metal around it doesn't burn anything it comes into contact)

If floorpans are bad, you will need to remove pretty much all the interior to repair or replace them. Seem to remember they had very thick tar type sound deadening, which catches fire quite easily and must be removed completely before welding anywhere close to it?

Oh right ... and for curiosities sake, how difficult is it to replace this tar? Sound proofing sounds (oh no I didn't say that!) quite nice.

For what it's worth I reckon your on to a winner with an xjs- I don't know how much you paid for it but I would have thought they are going to be highly regarded in years to come. Good luck with it!

I paid £1280 for it, which I'm told by the enlightened Jaguar people, that I could break it for more. Well, whatever it might be, I shouldn't lose too much money, but my main goal (if sustainable) is to get an MOT.

The tar type sound deadening can be found on Ebay................the original was same size as floor pans.

My top tip:

Invest in the Bentley service manual (like a Haynes but actually useful) for the XJ-S and get reading. Might cost you 50 quid, but it will save you hours and hours in the long run.

I think I'll buy the workshop manual for the XJS that is a digital download - my phone will be able to display it, so it's not like it's limited to my PC. The main reason is that A) It's £7 and B) The search function will never have been so handy for a 1200 page manual.

No job is too big...its all about how much time you have thats all A section or a small job each day or every other day and it will get done,the main objective is to enjoy the job and slowly move forward but always enjoying

BTW Drseb..i once owned a TWR xjs (6 liter, google it) with the full package and it had only done 30,000 miles,i paid £20,000 for it in the early 90,s and it was only a couple of years old and what a car that was.Best car ive ever owned
