EDIT: The only reason I use my age is because I actually like to try to impress people. I always get comments 30"Oh wow, you're 15 (soon 16 tbf) and you bought a car? Can you even drive?" (The latter is nearly always asked)

I don't think I use it for stuff. Anyway @gaz1 is right, I'll just hold up a sign with the website, and you can see that I'm not an adult. I just don't feel comfortable if people don't believe me.

Be interested to see some pics of your XJS. Last one I repaired was about 30 ago, and was rotten pretty much everywhere except the roof. Main dodgy area is where the rear axle locates onto the chassis, which is box section, with several skins to add strength. Might be able to get repair sections now, but XJS is not at all easy to repair, and I would say most pros would want to avoid...................

Yeah I've heard quite a bit about how brave and foolish I am in equal quantities. I'm really hoping it's just a case of "it's difficult and testing, but if you throw enough time into it [IE: my 2 months of summer holiday!!] then you can do it".

I'll have to have a closer look at the area. Fingers crossed it's okay!! Eeek! As for pictures, I can upload only what I have, but come Thursday, I can post a lot more since that's when it arrives.
First off, the floor pan: looks worse than it is, I swear.

I don't think the sills will need doing because the plate that connects the wheel arch to the sill is intact.

Wing ain't great but that's a worrying sign for the sill. Luckily, it's on the opposite side to what this Jag expert said was the problematic side. On the downside, this is the point where my camera stopped working. The other side is like this but more substantial rust. Maybe the sill indeed has gone

The area you need to look at very carefully is where the large diameter metalastik bushes at front of rear axle panhard rods (?) bolt onto chassis. This area rots internally and very often first sign of a problem is when bush tears out of chassis.................

Its possible to bodge them but cutting out and replacing is the only proper way. Sills and floor pans are most often rotten, and there is some thick tar type sound deadening, which tends to crack off and let water underneath.

I would guess properly done a tidy V12 XJS is pretty valuable now, but a rotten one is an awful lot of work, and is going to cost quite a lot of money to do (panels very pricey I would think).

Oh FYI it's a 4 litre 6 cylinder. I don't think this is that rotten to be fair. It's been cared for because inside the engine bay, where the shock absorbers attach onto the body, has been welded before. So I'm feeling confident it's not *too* bad.

Shame its a 6...............I would strongly suggest finding someone who knows what they are looking at to take a good look at it before doing anything in the way of buying welding gear etc. They are cars which rot while you are looking at them, and if you have bought without an MOT, would guess PO was frightened off getting another ticket following hefty quote. Why not ask on here if anyone close to you who knows XJS and able to have a look for you?

Don't be.
I know some of these fellas on here can be a little brash but there is a wealth of knowledge between them and you'll get the help and advice you need to do the job.
Check out the tutorials on the thin metal technique and have a practice first.
Pm me and I'll have a look to see if ive a pair of gauntlets and glasses to get your gear started. Unfortunately I really only do TIG at home so I cant help much.

Right I've spoken to my Dad for a battle plan to get started on the car on Thursday. First of all, I'm going to clean the fuses and fuse box, so as to stop them deteriorating - should be an easy job. Then my friend Richard suggested this:
The ingress of water to the front floorpans is via the seal on the windscreen without exception this is where the moisture gets in as the seal perishes over time - make that a priority job when you get her.

Then I will take off both wings and take them indoors for working on. At this point, how can I tell if the sill has gone or not? (IE: not just the top bit, but if the whole sill section has rotted away?)

Welcome Seb; One thing you have on your side is youth. At your age I would tackle almost anything (it can't be that difficult, can it?) I now shudder at some of the things, BUT, I learned a hell of a lot from the tricky ones. You will certainly gain a lot from this. Judging by the comments, quite a lot of panel forming skills .

If you look on web ,I think its Gov.uk , you can check a cars MOT history, look yours up and see what it tells you.Arther
