I'm completely new to welding

Hi guys,

I am completely new to MIG welding. I have never picked up a welder before so am entering into completely new territory.

I have just purchased a 1973 VW Beetle 1300 that needs some resto, and I have decided to take the plunge and tackle it myself.

The idea is to replace the floors, heater channels, front quarters, rear quarters and front wheel well.

I will take the advice of the forums and practice welds etc - I will send some photos in when I tackle each part of the project and ask for advice.

First question is what type of MIG Welder is recommended? I have read that the Clarke 135TE or 151TE would be a good choice for a DIY'er.

Welcome to the forums

Yes, the Clarke is a forum favorite. I had a Clarke 130EN (US model.) It worked flawlessly, but I wanted a bit more power at times.

For body work and light frame work, the 135 will be fine. The 151 will let you do up to 1/8".
