The Bolt cutters are double the price, Yet they cut double the thickness of material!

The bolt cutters arnt really much good on thin stuff and dont open very wide

What you really need is both

but if you want a compromise the first set come in bigger sizes and i would definitely recommend the 250mm pair will cut everything the bolt cutters will bar hardened wire rod

I've got two pairs of those 250mm ones, had them about 25 years!
Slack as a hoe's you know what now but still going strong.

I also love knipex especially the cobras being my favourite so far but I've ordered some big plier wrenches so hopefully if the reviews are true they might become my new favourite.
Anyway back to the subject I think it depends on what you're using them on most,like the other poster said harder the wire bolt cutters will be the best and softer snips better.
If it was me I would start with the snips a good set of wire cutters are always handy but I don't know what you'll mostly be using them on.

I've gone with the Knipex 7421180 High Leverage Angled Side Cutters.

The offset 12 ° Head is the main thing that sold it to me rather than the straight cutters + at £20 that seemed a reasonably good deal!

Maybe get the bolt cutters in the future if I'm feeling flush.

Must admit I only use snap on as they are covered l by a lifetime warranty, had three pairs in 15 years all free of charge.
Lads with knipex in the workshop have a right problem getting them exchanged.

if you need to get three pairs seems to me they are cutting the mustard...I had a pair snap on as a lad the van guy refused to replace them so manager banned snap on. dont get me wrong they do a lot of good kit, I like their boxes.

I use them for cutting alsorts so the jaws end up chewed, I also use them in all weather's so they will rust on the pin even when lubricated.
I don't think the initial outlay of £32 for them to be replaced FOC is a bad deal, even if they only last a year!
More fool the person who pays £20 a pair for them to struggle getting a replacement.

Also the lads in our workshop (28 of them) have altogether thousand on the the never never so he doesn't have an option really, only problem is getting him to turn up and I've used other dealers in other areas who seem to help me out without hassle.

Never seen Snap On cutters last any time the van man was never happy to change them either.
The Knipex had years both the standard side cutter style & the bolt cutter type they are 2 totally different tools, the bolt cutters I have cut 3mm SS rod for over 20 years, chipped the blades last week with abuse, cutting 5mm & trying to use them to bend it as well could not blame the cutters
For fine work Lindstrom again had 2 pairs of side cutters for 15\20 years still cut 1 strand of co\ax shielding wire

I'm not going to grumble personally! Snap on are rip off merchants if you ask me. They are also only as good as your dealer.

I've always got a small pair of Bahco progressive sidecutters in my box as they have a nice fine sharp tip that allows me to get into places the standard size cutters can't, and as the name suggests they can cut progressively tougher wire the closer it gets to the the pivot point.

That bottom set look nws i have a pair branded irwin there very good but the knipex jaw opening beats them

When I do brake pipes i tend to cut the pipes so use high leverage cutters either bolt cropper style or side cutter type, these fit the bill nicely, I cut about 10mm from both nuts, that does two things it seal the pipe and stops brake fluid running everywhere you can then make up the new pipe ready if you know the flares undo the nuts with hex sockets to save rounding, then start at the front join the new pipe as you then move to the other end the fluid is just starting to come out the far end, helping minimising air in the system.

i made the mistake of doing that once and put a dink in the cutting edge of some side cutters (was cutting steel brake line), i tried to get them exchanged but was told by snapon i had tried to cut something too hard/not intended purpose so no chance.
ive still got them as they wont break in a way snapon will then replace them so i ended up buying mac pliers which eventually went the same way.
i think your probably better of with a cheapy pair for butchering stuff so its cheap and easy to replace and have a knippex set for fine/everyday work.
thats what i do.

Clamp then in a vice wide open, long strong pole over one of the Jaws and peel it open, it'll crack off in the direction snap on allow for exchanges.

Snap On will not replace your pliers or cutters if the jaws or edges are chewed or worn.
The snap on warranty is based on manufacturing faults causing the tool to break. Wear doesn’t count.
The snap On life time warranty isn’t a thing to rave about. Don’t get me wrong I think a lot of there stuff is second to none and I own a lot of snap On gear but the warranty is a chore. Knipex cutters are extremely good. Certainly up there with the snap On offerings. I have both and none are a disappointment.

I got the plier wrench today I'm very happy with them. I thought they was a bit gimmicky but they work very well they're going to replace the bahco. expensive but highly recommend them.
