With hands on tuition from a competent welder I reckon you could learn more about stick,tig,gas or mig welding in an hour than watching or reading months of videos and books.

Ain't that the truth, I've taught a couple of people the basics of mig welding, simple things like setting the machine up correctly for them makes a massive difference so that they can actually lay down some decent beads and get some practice in. Usually they don't need much more than that and the odd pointer on technique and they are away.

I've used both, but I grew up using anthracite beans, and I still prefer them. Crushed housecoal worked quite well, in any case, it's all we had, but it does generate a fair bit of clinker.
@Mee Yes, it's more or less like a cake decorating stand. I'll be using it when the pots are half dry (leather hard). It just makes it easier being able to rotate things on a solid base.

Friends are both retired potters and being self employed they had a turntable, replaced the bearings on it for them, and it was a large item, they had a smaller one and they turned out some tremendous work, they used the larger one to trim large plates formed from slip and I ended up making an adjustable cutter for them. Still got some nice prototype pieces they made.
