Identifying an angle grinder

Hi everyone I'm currently working on next video, which I think will be very interesting because I'm discovering things I've never seen before while disassembling it .
I'm struggling to give it an age or at least understand from which era it belongs.
I'm pretty sure it has at least 50 years

It is a superstar professional ANS/B .
I've tried to look around the net but didn't have luck at all

There were a few american makers of all metal body grinders & drills.
Black & decker, Van Norman, Wen, Power Kraft, etc.
I think some of the big names in air tools also made electric tools, chicago pneumatic, sioux, etc.

The brush holder orientation is very odd, and may help in identifying.

I have a very big circ saw of a similar design.....no idea on make but before it was put in a box for the trip here it did work.....
but I need to go to the gym to use it......man it's heavy.....hahaha....

wasn't there a place on the forum for old tools /machines.....?

I know who produced it and even where Star in Milan.
I'd like to discover when.
I've completely dismantled the thing but didn't find nothing.
Powertools usually have dates inside, I've only found a part number on the switch but it's a property design so there's no way to understand when it has been built.
I'm not even sure if star was already part of the black and decker group at the time they built this grinder.

This one is not that bad, not heavy at all, my modern Metabo Is way heavier.

Made a little research, the angle grinder as we know it today was invented by Flex in 1954
220V in Italy became the standard mains voltage in 1965 .
Taking in consideration that this angle grinder has a trigger switch and not a toggle switch.
I think that it could have been made between 1965 and 1970 because it still has an M18 spindle.
Might be older because of it's built construction, I'm not referring to the metal body but to the splined couplings on pinion and crown gear, and evidently machined parts.
I've once dismantled an old flex metal body grinder produced for Würth.
It had already cylindrical couplings despite the lever switch.

Black & Decker went plastic in the early 70s. I suppose, at the time, it saved an earth conductor in the flex.

and a fair few deaths from electrocution

speaking of old cr@p....found this today in a box of junk.....
will convert it to propane I think....
worth €5 euro's just to put on the shelf with the other old junk I seem to collect....
thought when fixed might be good to repair old car rads....well simple jobs anyway...

I wonder if that was originally used for stained glass work?

They were usually involved in sealing coffins.
At least here in Italy we have the regular wooden coffin outside but it has another zinc one inside they seal with a soldering iron similar to the one shown

Good old Wolf Power Tools build like the preverbal brick *********, I've a Sapphire plastic 5/8" gut buster drill that was made in the 1970's. Wolf metal cased tools were built up to the late 1960's maybe, I'd hazard a guess it's probably 70 years old at least...

Can't be 70 years old yet IMHO.
Ackerman and Schmidt (nowadays Flex) invented the modern angle grinder in 1954, I believe they deposited a patent for the design, so other manufacturers could have had to wait for releasing their own design.
I've seen old Wolf straight grinders on eBay .
I'm kinda fascinated by those (every manufacturer) metal casing post war power tools.
They are built differently, I wouldn't be surprised to discover that part were manually machined too

That's a Black & Decker 7" angle grinder. I had one until this year bought it off a member here. They are rugged but very heavy and they use a larger thread than modern 7" and 9" grinders which I think are 14mm. These are probably 5/8" thread. The discs fit the same but don't lose that nut.

Mine came with a particularly vicious wood carving attachment. I may still have that bit somewhere but it will be a while before I find it.

I've noticed the larger thread, loosing it wouldn't be that much of a problem, since I have a lathe .
Mine too came with one of those horror stories chainsaw disc ...
I was about to throw it away but I then remembered it's made out of good laminated steel, so I've kept It of I'll need it to make a knife or something else .
Not willing to use it on a grinder at all.
