Identify this machine

Hi all, so when I bought the lathe and pillar drill etc I was given this grinder. From what I did a bit of research and determined that Blakelsley make mower sharpening tools. I can’t see what use this has for grinding blades though. Any idea? It all works as well and doesn’t look like it’s had much use.

Maybe it’s for grinding the relief angle on cylinder mowers? But the again maybe not!

looks quite useful, or even very useful, it must be a blade grinder, Robbie had a few contacts at golf courses, probably came from there or the local council, he also did work for them,

That would be my guess too. The helical blade on a cylinder mower needs a vastly more complicated mechanism to grind. They are incredibly interesting pieces of machinery, this one on the other hand looks like a simple flat blade grind.

Nice bit of kit though, probably a bit too specialised to be a useful general purpose workshop tool.

I suspect it's only for the bed knife, aka bottom blade, but have never used one - we used to order new knives as required since the Club budget didn't stretch to stuff like that , and for years we had no power to the Greenkeepers' shed.

Similarly our cylinders were ground for us when needed [hit a stone with one and it's useless until reground/resharpened]. We DID have a backlapping machine [designed by me, it actually worked ] to 'dress' the cylinders but had to go to the Clubhouse for power [you could do it manually with a socket & brace but that could take hours ] and only when it didn't rain....

Did a cylinder mower blade on a lathe w. grinder once, turning by hand...turned out great. I used to dress the bottom blade with a file, not much to it, well there could be, I was 15 at the time.

The bed knife would make sense actually. I’ve never thought about how cylinder mowers cut. I did think about selling but I’d only donate all of the money to charity. It’s only fair seeing as I paid nothing for it. I’d be up for a trade maybe though.
