They are stone masons chisels, used to carve stone.

Used to be hand made by the mason and sharpened to their working angle.

They are a nice set. I may be jealous.

Those are not stone masons chisels. They are caulking chisels. I got given some a couple of weeks back.

got to admit, i dont think they are chisels.
the ends are blunt.

caulking irons, as used by boiler makers to pound sealants into seams on steam engines, or on cast iron sewer pipes.
sort of ties in with the huge spanners, which would be used to tighten flange bolts?

Yep, definitely boilermaker's caulking chisels. It's sad to see them abandoned. I think it's called progress.

Quick question.

After their use as "Cauking Chisels" is there any chance they could of been repurposed as Stone mason tools.

I ask for one simple reason. At a few sites I work on where they do stone restoration. They have very similar tools for rough carving the stone blocks. Before the detail works are added?

I wasnt too far off the mark then. was thinking lead /sheet shaping and forming tools by there profiles.

I've used some, way back in the distant past...Not for banging sealant in, but when you rivet two sections together, you belt the inside edge of the plate inwards, all along the edge and it seals it. I did it on a steam engine. We hot rivetted it first, 3/4" rivets and an air gun. One person inside and one outside. Deafening!

The chisels look like the ones my Dad and I used when installing sections of cast iron sewer pipe together. Jute cord was first tamped in around the joint, then an adjustable asbestos rope collar was clamped around the belled opening where the two pipes came together to contain lead as it was poured in. After cooling, the lead was tamped in around the joint to provide a tight seal which plant and tree roots could not penetrate.
