Its smaller than the Boxford, and not as strongly built, but I have had hours of fun with it. Nice little lathe for a beginner, but being a mini lathe, it does have limitations

This one seems a little pricey to me - you can get a bigger machine for similar money.

I think they were less than that new a few years ago!

How much do you have to spend? Do you want something that will last? How desperate are you?
Personally, I'd sooner have a nice solid British made lathe any time.

well i've been looking for about 3 months because of a budget of £500. everything in that range either is so old and knackered or too far away. i think i will settle for the clarke due to it being close ish and fairly new so i can cut metric threads etc. also it's a good price for what i've seen them going for.

It's been really bad time to buy one.

With lockdown a lot of people have been spending far more time (and money) on "at home" projects and lathes (particularly smaller ones) are one of those where the price has skyrocketed.

If you'd been looking, even a year ago, you might have found something to fit the bill. But prices have doubled in the last 12 months.

What does everyone think of a Clarke CL430? Bit sceptical as the carriage is moved by a handle on the lead screw? What's your thoughts on this?

We have one of the diddy Clarke lathes at work, you practically get RSI from winding the carriage up and down.
Also trying to get (and keep) the cross-slide gibs adjusted to a decent fit is a pain; the x-slide leadscrew also appears to be bent or threaded off-centre as you can watch the slide wiggle from side to side as it traverses.
Generally, avoid like the plague.

Just bide your time ,come the lockdown easing there will surely be a few on the market from the Faddy types who don't really have a use for one . I bet there will be a few puppies around in the rescue homes as well. Aren't folk wonderful?
