You can get machines that will only run one way, so probably specifically designed for that, but they do work with some success on broken studs
to get heat into the stud without cooking the rest of the job drill the stud to the correct size for the extractor, then push a piece of good fitting bar or a bolt in the hole and heat that up, the heat will conduct into the broken stud, copper rod is ideal if you have some
Tig paul, I wil be needing this sooner than I expected.
Trying to get the rear disc of My BMW R1100, it is held on by two chocolate bolts with loctite. used heat, first one now has a nice round hole in the top of it, the second one has a roundish hole. Any more ideas anybody?

I think you are on a hiding to nothing using tapered stud extractors. I would go with the wisdom in this thread.
TORX bits are very good at removing sheared studs.
