Id this belt please?

Motor to gearbox belt on the lathe.

Appears to be slipping, and on inspection its not in the best of conditions.

Top measures 14mm then tapers down to roughly 8mm, approx 825mm length. Can I replace with a rubber v belt?

I always thought link belts like this were all the same width but haven't really used them much in the past.

Photo of top pulley from motor for extra reference, you can see which one is been running on.

That pulley was hot when I took the belt off, motor, shaft and bottom pulley all cold.

Also worth noting, not the original motor for the lathe so I massively doubt the pulley is original. Looks like it's off a drill

I'd say that's an A size belt. Old style fan belt size IIRC.

Thanks, does seem to match the specs for the A size.

Would there be any harm in changing it for a modern rubber belt? Both pulleys are open at 1 end so fitting doesn't require a link to be split

T link will do the job.

You'd need to measure angle of pulley to buy a proper belt.

I've ordered an A section link belt and an A section V belt, will try both, see which works best...

That diameter is pretty small, if buying a solid belt, I would get the notched option.

Those link belts don't grip nearly as well as a proper v belt.
They should only be used in a situation where you can't use a normal belt or as an emergency until you get a proper belt.

I can't understand why they are used in normal situations as they are a lot more expensive than a vee belt, don't grip as well and are very noisy!

well...rubber V belt arrived first, threw it on and it runs a lot quieter, took some heavy-ish cuts (1mm depth of cut) for this lathe and it didnt stall like it was doing yesterday with 0.25mm depth of cut.

will monitor the tension over the next few little jobs and check it for any signs of wear due to not fitting the gorrze properly, but it feels good on both pulleys
