Pass some DC current (say a couple of amps) between a pair of the supply leads, and use a screwdriver or something else non-magnetised, but containing iron, as a probe, and move it around the pole faces of the stator. You should then know how many poles there are. Repeat for the other two possible pairs, and see if it all makes sense.
