I wondered why my P38 Range Rover sounded like a "bag of spanners"

Split the gearbox this afternoon and this is what I found!

There were two bell housing bolts missing and the rest weren't that tight. I suspect that excessive movement between gearbox and engine over a period of time just over stressed the flex plate.

I should say that I bough the car, cheap, as a set of spares for mine, but when I heard it and talked to the seller about the symptoms - I suspected the flex plate.

Nice to have it confirmed!

You've not seen my welding!

The plate is actually only £30! It's just the two days it takes me to remove and replace the box and this ain't no small gearbox and transfer box!

Hi, I've had it a number of times, they do it in normal service. The cheap price tells you it's a fast moving item. I know you're jesting but don't weld them if you find them just cracked, they're spring steel.
