That's pretty much one of the main points of modern "art", I believe.
You have to wonder how many of these established "artists" are deliberately taking the mick out of the art critics & those who drink in their every word?
I.e. "create" some random pile of nonsense - then present it to these highly-opinionated critics (themselves seeking out methods to perpetuate their own standing & living)
- who in turn apply themselves to conjuring up some flowery prose to "explain" & "justify" the "art" to its audience.
- Then, the audience (not having a clue cos its tat, but not wanting to let on & lose face) drink in & nod sagely as the Critic delivers his lofty diatribe with keywords like "existential" in there, agree enthusiastically (the more confident even daring to debate alternate flights of fancy meanings to the "art" ....
- all the while building a reputation & exposure of the "pile of tat" & giving it gravitas & meaning that it never had.
Nothing - becomes Something, fuelled by nothing more than manufactured opinion.
Here I think - is where you'll find the artfulness & art - not in the object (which never had any) but in manipulating a willing audience into believing it is "art" & therefore worthy of a ridiculous sum.

You're overthinking it. It's conceptual art, understand the concept; in this case, a pun poking fun at the art world, enjoy it, laugh along, roll you eyes, whatever you like, and move on.
It's not Matisse's; L'escargo, where some things are supposed to be a visual representation of something in an abstract way. It's just a pile of old rope, in every way.

That applies to pretty much all art. Think of all those beautifully painted dead Jesuses hanging in world renowned galleries. Don't like it? Ignore and move on.
I'm not sure all the "quotes" are needed either. If someone has been to art school, received a qualification and exhibited their work in galleries then they are an artist.

I think we can safely say that's bunkum. I'm not even referring to artists specifically here. I'm referring to many trained & qualified folk. A piece of paper does not a good "insert whichever trade or such you like here" make.

They are an artist. A terrible one maybe, they are still an artist. The good or bad part is just personal opinion
Within that description, I am an artist. I had a sculpture exhibited in Angemünde*, Germany in 2016. A photograph of it was used to illustrate an article in a local newspaper's coverage of the exhibition. It's soon to be re-exhibited in a garden near Prenzlau, Germany.
It's an aluminium casting of the inside of a partly rotten fencepost.
