Flat with stick is easy with anything above 2.5mm rod. You can almost drag the flux across the steel and it burns itself with a decent rod

Peeling isn't always indicative of a good weld Judge it cleaned or cleaned and tested even better
That's not to say good welds won't peel but sometimes bad ones do.

With regards to basics (low hydrogens) what issues were you experiencing. They can be a bit tricky for learning as the don't strike as easy as a rutile nor are they as tolerant to bad arc length technique. They tend to go out if the arc length is too long and stick if too short. Where as you can get away with a bit more on a rutile. The slag is generally more difficult to remove (peeling does not happen) also the machine needs to be capable of lighting them up 70:16's are even worse than 70:18 iirc. You'll need a decent ocv to keep em going along with other charectoristics that I'm not familiar with. The way they are treated plays a big part too. If they are not fresh out of a vac pack they will need to be baked and used hot as they suck in moisture like a sponge and don't give the properties expected from a low hi. Others can elaborate on this better than me as my mma knowledge is quite limited compared to other processes.

of course we never beat at a weld but rake at it along its edges just thought I might mention the slag thing cheap 6013 seem to go peeling off before you hardly finish the run (super 6 almost give up and peel once the glow is gone for instance but you also get wandering arc and inclusions at the same time) but as you correctly point out 7018 and the like usually need at least some encouragement (unless their situe creates a lift on cooling) . A few think this slag stopping on means the rod or weld isn't as good but in fact it can be the exact reverse. The way I look at it is the slag is there to do a job and I like to see a decent coverage and an easy enough release with a quick raking along its edge

I use bhoer how ever spelt 7016 from my oven beautiful little tap hear and there pops right off altho after using a comet and the slag just popping off I thought I would not have had much issue yes the metal was not clean but I've never had much issue for ten pound difference I'd by the comets again or the 7016 bhoers how ever spelt
