If I could find a really nice(not rusty) Trooper with a reliable 3.0TD id have one in a shot, cracking motorFair enough, if you rely on the car that much then the extra money may be worth it. I personally feel it's a case where the reputation is bigger than the reality.
Similar used to happen in the bike world, used Honda's were expensive because everyone knew they were the most reliable, but in reality you could pay a lot less for a Yamaha and it would be almost as reliable for a lot less money.
The Land Cruiser IIRC didn't come with a decent petrol option. Diesels of that era are a poor drive and noisy. The Trooper came with a powerful and smooth V6 with auto that's a delight to drive, so that's what I went for.
