I could write a book with all the places I've seen in the last 25 years. Best one was a nuclear power station when moving spent fuel rods. We were behind a 2 m thick glass wall, room was glowing blue. A sight I'll never forget and prbably never see again

When I worked at Pilkington Special Glass we used to make those windows, which in itself was a feat of engineering!!

They used to be cast in a giant mould and after being filled up (took about 2 days) the still red glowing mould was craned into a cooling kiln and took about 3-4 months to cool down.

Think the cutlery industry round Sheffield used to use pit grinders like that a lot for hollow grinding blades.

ISTR that the army had really serious problems with recruitment for the Crimean War because of the working conditions in the early part of the Industrial Revolution. At the time of the Napoleonic Wars most of the population was working on the land, so there were plenty of big, bluff, healthy country lads who were used to a hard life outdoors. Fast forward a generation and that had all changed with mills, mines and factories providing the bulk of the work. Finding lads who didn't have bad lungs or bad eyes or rickety legs was nigh on impossible. Even finding ones that met the minimum height requirements was a major issue...

Reminds me of when I served my apprenticeship in the shipyard as a fitter. However we did have safety gear by 1988. God that seems a lifetime ago.

I think it's down to the type of camera used, very slow exposure. My grandad has a school photo with the same boy at each end as he ran around the back, and one boy in the photo all blurred out because he shook his head!

Aye and big rubber gloves built into the wall to work the lathe behind the screen to reprocess those spent rods :-)

Back in the day when I visited for work I 'had a go' while the operator watched me, I'm very sure that wouldn't happen today ..

Interesting times as I was providing a service that had to work 'everywhere' .. so I had to go 'everywhere' to see if there were any potential issues so I got to see lots of places that MOP wouldn't be lucky enough to see. Peering down into the deep blue ponds at the containers beneath thinking wonder whats in that lot :-)

Of course there were even guided tourist visits back then but they I understand are a thing of the past

NO it was a bench grinder--- BUT--- for grinding THE BENCH
Also I couldn't grind 3mm drills on that !! bloody stupid thing is turning the wrong way must need a phase swapping or more likely and not quite as easy, they need to get the river to run uphill.

Ah never thought ---------but its got a nice seat and you would have to kneel, to steady yourself on the other side

Anyway they were being HS conscious if you notice the seat has no back, so if the item being ground caught on the wheel it wouldnt drag you in----- it would just back flip you off the seat,and so no damage to you or the ground item. And the peek on your flat cap would stop the dust going in your eyes, as you flipped.

Single phase motor ?

Yeah it was switched on when the picture was taken and they are still waiting for it to reach full speed, and in that time they have fitted 137 capacitors------- whilst it was still spinning.
