I have bought a lot of the old 1970's/80's blue handled marples or record chisels, I have a Tormek so restoring them to a razor sharp perfect cutting edge is an easy job. They can be bought for next to nothing on ebay and will continue to provide good service long after I have lost interest.
They are night and day difference to anything modern

^^^ This, The old blue & black handled marples are excellent, i have a selection i use for tearing out when im ripping into an old boat repair, When you are liable to hit hidden bolts screws & nails, fibreglass & filler, To my shame i use them with a hammer & they stand up to abuse really well.
All have been picked up at boot fairs for a few quid at most or out of skips.
Better than damaging my decent wooden handled antiques!

I hate to admit it, but for just doing hinges I find the Dewalt chisels fine, especially if you take the bulk out with a trim router, which is my preferred method.
You also don't cry when you drop it edge down on the concrete.

I've got a couple of honing guides (one was my dads actually) and stones, I also have a couple of those flat diamond hones that seem ok.
The leather thing I don't have.

A bit of old leather belt glued to a bit of flat planed timber will do very well.
Rub it over with the finest polishing compound that can be had, and eye - watering sharpness shall be yours for the asking......

yep the acid test is shave the hairs of the back of your arm with one. if it doesnt its not sharp enough

The test on a budding knife is to see if the blade sticks into the skin surface of a fingertip under just its own weight.....
No doubt there are sharper things, but not by a great amount......

As a long time professional wood botherer, I have to say that the modern Marples set is OK. Handles don't break, even if using a hammer.

BUT, they can't hold a candle to an old, proper, Marples, with "Made in Sheffield" stamped into the blade. Do not hold an edge anything like as well. Proper Marples had wooden handles, and needed to be used with a wooden mallet.

Footprint, Ward, and Marples were best and most available. I can't comment on modern ones other than Marples, as I have never had to buy any. B&Q and the likes are good for opening paint tins though, and I use them as gasket scrapers and for car bodywork.

Bevel edge chisels are not good for producing mortices either, as they twist.

I have a few old splitproof with the red and yellow acetate handles and the steel is definitely of a higher quality than a boxed set that I bought in 2010. Even the finish is better, the Sheffield made ones have a smooth finish on the back, the new ones look like they have been fly cut or something. The new ones are decent, far better than any no name gear but Robert Sorby they ain't.

I needed to sharpen a couple of chistles yesterday to notch out a bit of oak flooring so I dug out my dad's old oil (spit) stone and an Eclipse jig and they turned out pretty good for some old Wickes no brand chistles.
I don't think I'd cut my own fingers under their weight on them but not bad.

ive used a stone before now to sharpen them and there sharp enough to cut you easily

Give the edges a final lick over with the wood backed leather , and they'll be a good bit better again.
The stoning is the preliminary operation, really , certainly on woodcarving stuff.
Blunt tools are not only inefficient, they are also more dangerous , being a distraction.

I am going to throw a been and queued Magnusson chisel set into the mix. Good value and even a meat head like me hasn't managed to destroy them.

I was quite happy with my nice old marples and stanley ones but I saw these and had a weak moment , on their way now .!

About thirty years ago I stuck my neck out and bought a set of proper Japanese chisels, I recently looked them op and to replace them is well over a grand! I didn't pay that for them I know for sure but I did leave myself short that month buying them. Now I need to sell them and I would like to get at least something back for them so does anyone have any suggestions other than ebay?
