I`ve got an Anvil

The blokes fulcrum idea, but stick the end of the lever under something and use the trolley jack where he has the fulcrum.

I got my anvil out of a skip, two of use struggled to get it out of the skip. I look at it and wonder how the **** we managed to lift it.

Like metalspanner says put a bar between the link arms of the tractor. Then use another bar at 90 degrees sitting under the axle and over the link arm bar to give you a sort of low level crane. All a bit dodgy but might do the job.

Is it worth getting a cheapo chain hoist? You can get them for 20 or 30 quid and if you have no other lifting gear, it'll probably be handy to have around?

A stout tree branch above the car boot, et voila!

Quite a few of the suggestions ignore the fact that you've subsequently got to move it into position and put it on top of the stand!

Personally, I think the phone-a-friend option is cheapest, quickest and most risk-free. 2 cwt isn't much between two people.

Nice find Debs, no looking back with a decent anvil, if you have cast steel base, swap this for a solid hard wood base, kinder on the ear when bashing away at a lump of metal, I need to source a decent chunk of wood myself to replace steel base.

As for removal from car, perhaps you can fab up something to fit in to Hardy hole (square hole at opposite end from horn) secure, then lift out with tractor?

If the tractor could lift it, surely a strop / rope would suffice without the need to fab a special mount?

Incidentally, if it is a metal stand, put a layer of plasticine or similar between anvil and stand. It'll save your ears and stop it bouncing around every time you hit the thing. Highly recommended and easier than a new stand.

the best wood to use is a 2ft tree trunk about a foot high and staple anvill on to it

fab up some sort of hoist to fit on the three point linkage basically a solid non moving engine hoist and you can lift it with the three point linkage and then it will double up as a behind tractor engine hoist aswell so you will have something to lift other stuff then when you need to

Ok, it`s out of the car and through the door into the workshop.....and ready to break my shins!

I opted for backing the car as close up and square-on to the workshop door as possible and using the height of the door-step (8") in my favour: just inside the door I built a sturdy tower from several blocks of 6" x 6" x 12" hardwood, (effectively) 3 ft. back from the car and balanced a wide, 8ft. long RSJ, centred on the 'tower' and with 1 ft. at the end of the girder, inside the car`s load area (which is flat/lip-less).....walked/blocked/levered the anvil up onto the girder and with the help of some grease, slid the anvil (carefully) along the RSJ until the anvil was over the top of the 'tower'...... and consequently, there was no weight on the car end......moved the car out of the way, and then carefully moved the anvil further, slowly-passing the point of balance, the RSJ tipped gently down to the ground and I guided the anvil slowly down-hill until it was on the floor.......and again for the stand (which seems nearly as heavy' as it`s (basically) a 2" thick x 24" x 16" steel plate with legs/feet ).

It`s very definitely a 224 Lbs. anvil....an absolute dead weight; even trying to drag/walk it on the floor is nigh-on impossible.....I plan on cutting up a scaffold tube to make several rollers to use move it into it`s final place; but that`s for another day.

If all else fails Debs ,try and rock and roll the anvil up off the boot floor on with levers and wood blocks , short boards /bits of wood and then bricks till you get it above the level of the boot lip by about 3 inches then slide two stout planks across the lip ( protect the lip with a layer of thick carpets etc . , then slide a sheet of mild steel onto the planks so it is just levered under the edge of the anvil.

Support the free end of the planks say on something like that nice green stand you made and then gently make a spanish hoist ( it is loop of rope ) , anchor it at one end and twist to slowly draw the anvil on the plank , remake the hoist as needed or use a cahin to anchor the anchored end and adjust the chain instead , you'll need two windlass bars for this way .

Once it is well out the boot and on the planls use the jack to lift the planks up clear of the boot and drive the car away , slide in the second stand for safety .

Bung a rope on the back end of the tractor , stick it around the anvil and drive off in the tractor will get it off the planks and stand if you so choose

Now use the three point gear and steel bar across them and a pair of scaffold poles welded in a few places along their length to make a shadoof type leverage system . Anchor the bottom end down to the tow bracket and you have a lifting device to site the anvil ..it matters not it it falls off this lifter ???
Use the rope loop of the spanish hoist to make a figure of 8 sling to do the lift via the toe & heel of the anvil , if needed you can restrain the fig 8 from opening up by using another rope .

Take care with the 3 point lift idea just incase the whole leverage & anvil weight is enough to tip the tractor up.

For moving it do you have any sheet steel to make a grease sandwich or two with .
Four sheets 2foot x 2foot will give you two sandwiches and it will be very easy to slide the greased plates with the anvil on over each other and walk it to the place of siting...


You can use any fixed points , window frames door frames with ropes around the anvil and spars as an anchor to slide and lever it to the final position .

If you need to lift the anvil up use the lever system as you used before to get it out the car and make your lifting beams long enough to do it .

Lift it five inches higher than needed , carefully positioning the anvil over the stand and slide three or four 4 inch thick blocks of ice ( freeze water in a poly bag put in an old marg tub or similar ) on the plinth and slowly lower the anvil down onto the ice by removing blocks .

Take out the beams and as the ice melts it will slowly settle on the block .
