I'll fill the gouges up with a mix of base coat and 2k clear till it's proud, then after a week or so, shave it back and polish.

Unfortunately I don't think the star will come off very easily as I think I glued it on with Tigerseal.

Mate had the up and over garage door come down on the roof of his nearly new Hillman Avenger. Luckily it had a vinyl roof so the dent / crease wasn't too noticeable so never repaired until car was scrapped around 10 years later

accidents happen no one died its just a mark/dent clean it up /get it panited and move on after a few days it wont be as bad

Lucky it wasn't a new one !

Friends dad had a two year old Astra, and the whole garage fell on it. Along with the timber truck that rolled onto the garage. It was carrying five felled oak tree trunks about three feet in diameter. It was a bit worse than your boot lid, and the engine is still in my workshop.

I've seen that car, and it's beautiful! You must be gutted

I adjusted the balk of timber bolted to the garage floor so that when the rear wheel was against it I had the minimum practical clearance between the garage door and the nose of the car - about 1cm.

One day I actually had the other half of the garage clear of 'projects' and threw the car in at a slight angle.

Just enough for the bottom edge of the door to scrape down almost the full length of the nose!

Oh pooh quoth I.

Fortunately it was the plastic bit and the black plastic doesn't show up so much against the burgundy paintwork - to the extent that SWMBO still hasn't noticed after 3 years!

It's my modern daily and I've never really bonded with it - it's just a transport appliance.

How did you manage to do yours?

I also have another small area of 'patina' where I tripped over said timber, fell against the driver's door and the corner of my glasses gouged a long trail out of the paint.

I was delivering at a industrial estate , got to the firm just before they opened , artic was already parked in the next unit , loads of cars arriving and parking , just as as I was unloading the artic started , drew out but had to do a hard turn because of cars parked along the road, rear end of container/trailer swung wide literaly ripping the whole side of a car off, driver did nt realise andoff he went , I popped my head in and told them , some one went screaming down the road to catch lorry while a guy was standing in shock looking at basically a write off....I finished unloading and cleared off.

How did you manage to do yours?

The garage has a hanging string showing where to stop the car and give clearance for the garage door. However, I'd been tidying up and rolled it back a few cm to get round the front of the car, and that was enough for the internal handle to hit the boot lid when I forgot to push it back.

think you're paint touch up looks better than mine does, now.......although 20 years ago it looked good after I painted it shown with a pound coin to show the size of the cracks in the paint.

Here's what I used today.

Festool shaving block, some 3000 grit and polishing compound.

After shaving I did a bit of light sanding with the 3000 grit pad by hand. The 3000 grit haze can easily be polished out by hand without having to break out the rotary polisher.

Not perfect, maybe one day I'll do a spot repair as the mercedes star could be used to mask the edge. More likely I'll just forget about it.

Lovely job, but in 30 years it would have become patina.
