I Need To Make A Burner

Hi all,

I have constructed me a forge from a propane bottle, lined it and set all the doors up - I just need a burner now. I have looked at a few plans online but they all seem to be American stuff - I can't get my head around what they are on about.... so...... anyone built one??

You you reckon it'd cope in a forge? Actually in the cylinder that is lined with the fire cement stuff?

I built one a while back in this thread

I had a look at info on the net but eventually used dimensions from a book by Michael Porter. I think he was on this forum for a bit.

I machined and welded most of the bits rather than use off the shelf parts.

I could measure it up tomorrow and give you a few dimensions.

I just spent the evening building a waste oil burner for my furnace,nearly ready,drip feed and compressed air.My furnace is a monster and costs an arm and a leg in propane to run lol

Burners designs using mig tips for nozzle seem to be plentiful on the net. The burner doesn't go inside the forge it blows heat in through a pipe usually. There are blown versions which need an additional fan and naturally aspirated ones. Try instructables for ideas, always a good place to start.

Iv built a couple with 0.6mm mig tips I feel it flows far too much gas, would be more suited to a forced induction burner, personally I find the best thing to use a carburettor jet, cheap and can be easily changed if you need to lean up the flame

I contacted bullfinch about their burners, they told me that the 1250 burner would run a small forge with no problems, you would need to have a larger opening into the forge so enough air is able to be pulled in with the draw of the burner, you dont actually push the burner tip into the forge`s "air space", you just fit it so it is slightly short of the inlet then all the heat is going into the forge but the burner tip is protected by the lining of the forge and so protected form the heat.
The burner will in time wear/melt/wear out but the bullfinch ones are only around £17, hamilton gas seems a goo place to buy the burners although bullfinch are happy to sell direct so give them a ring and they will sort you out. There are burners of different sizes either side of the 1250 so you can have a few different burners for different uses as they all fit the same pipework.

Jim on the " kiss " principle ..... if the jet tube comes in via the end of the mixing tube it is easier to do ... is like a standard handheld gas blow lamp with a disposable cylinder .

Any expanation for his complicated expensive additional pipe work ??
