Hello Folks, you have probably read about my Pancreatitis episode, After being home 24 hours answered a knock on the door to find one of my neighbours there, he asked if an old chap had just been to my door, I said, nobody at all had called, then told me he had watched a car back into front of mine while it was parked outside my front door, He knew he had made contact because he saw my car rock,Crafty old devil had come to my door as if to report it but didn't knock or ring the bell,Luckily neighbour photographed his car and number plate, The thing that makes things a little awkward if it comes to insurance etc, My policy with Saga ends tonight, and i have got another insurer in place to start tomorrow.I have rung the police and they are coming tomorrow afternoon,How weird is that for an accident 5hours before your insurance cover ends,

If you have online access to your insurance "account" get the incident reported tonight so it's logged.

I was hoping to get all this sorted out without insurance involvement,I don't think there is much damage and the guy might pay up when the police trace him, also won't logging it with the police and having a witness be good enough proof of time of incident?

I also think it would be better to keep it away from the insurance company and hope the old guys makes it a smooth outcome. Not sure if the police would prosecute him for failing to report an accident, small as it maybe. That could complicate matters (if and when he tells his own insurance company he` s got points for xyz) , and leave a “paper trail” back to you (your insurance company etc).

It tends to have potential to open up all kinds of issues. They say things like “It won’t effect your premium but we still need to know about it”. Then their computer system probably factors the report in to the insurance quote next year.

It is a bit of a headache. Someone nudged in to the back of me at a roundabout. You know how it is, you’re edging forward and the guy behind thinks you’ve gone without paying attention. Made minute cracks in my bumper. Repair places wanted to replace bumper/spaying etc. Long story short, I just let it go. Everyone happy. If it’s NOT very minor then yes you have to follow everything through.

Don't tell the insurance peeps, they'll sell your number on and claim companies will be phoning you every night for the next 20 years.

On the other hand if the insurance company state that you must tell them of any incident and you don't and they find out they may refuse to pay on a subsequent more serious matter,

It's yet another financial con, because they increase your premium they're in effect lending you the money to get your car fixed.

If the old boy won't come to the table go through the motions of taking him to the small claims court , it will probably frighten him into cooperating. Think that you can even do it on line now .

So what damage if any has he caused??--- Think you got bad luck, when we bought the house it was site 240 when the street got a name and house numbers we got No 13. Its been downhill ever since--or it seems that way.

Police came to see me today,Gave them all the info, they went off to see the offender, came back to me ,said he know he had bumped me but thought there was no damage (Pitch black 7pm)Going to get a couple of estimates tomorrow, he told the police he would pay " As long as its reasonable" Watch this space!

great the miserable sods wouldnt give me a guys number after he smashed all the front of my van on a private carpark i had to pay a fiver and get it from the dvla

A friend of mine in West Yorks had that problem, they quoted the Data Protection act. Yet here in S. Yorks a neighbour had his car damaged and the police put a note on his windscreen with the driver's name & address on for all to see!

years ago a guy drove into my car and did a runner he thought he had got away with it as the car wasn't registered to anyone and he just dumped it, i saw him run off so knew what he looked like, went and had a rummage through his car and bingo he'd left a time sheet, plod took me to his house to id him
