I need an adapter for my welder.

hi guys. I have another question. The welder I want to get is a 230 volt but I only have a 110 outlet in my garage. I'm a renter so there's not to much I can do about it. I'm shopping for an adapter or inverter. whatever it's called but I can't find them. I remember finding them on a site once but I can't remember where I found them.

oh, and I don't need the higher amps that I would get from the 230 volt outlet.

Hi Geoff. Isn't the 230v supply in the US 3 phase? If so, you will require either an inverter or a rotary converter to get from single phase 110v to 3 phase 240v but you'll need to make sure your 110v outlet can handle the required amps.

Do you have a dryer outlet or an electric oven outlet, either of them should run a welder ?

my garage is far from the dryer. It's on the opposite side of my place. I can't really call an eletrician for this. Does anyone make an inverter/adapter for this?

You will spend a fortune on a transformer to stepup 110 to 220. You will also only get half the current. So on a 15A 110v circuit you could only get about 7 amps at 220V.

It will be cheaper to have an outlet wired or wire one yourself.

Archie, 3-phase is 208V. Us homes are wired 110/220 split phase (220V center tapped.)

that's sad. I figured it would be cheap. My 110 to 220 volt european adapter only costed me $4.

can the mig welder be modified to run off of 110?

You would have to rewind the transformer for 110V.

The issue with the adapter is the amount of power. A small MIG is about 2400 watts (actually VA).

alright I gave up on that mig welder and got a cheap 110volt flux cored welder. Now the shielded gas. If I'm welding somewhere with poor ventilation is there a respirator I can wear for dealing with all the gas that'll get into the air?
