We bought the Scheppach wacker plate from Aldi when we did our brick weave. Comparing this to hiring one worked for us as we did not have to get everything done in one go. Still have it for when we do our drive.
it is longer available from Aldi but can be brought from Scheppach direct for £299, here is the link Scheppach compactor (wacker plate)

I have a wacker neuson wp1235 in the garage that someone has taken the Exciter apart on and lost the parts. Plus the engine has seized. The plate is still in good nick. A loncin engine to replace the Honda is around £150 and the Exciter components would be relatively easy to make it you had access to a lathe and mill.
It is likely going to the scrap bin so could be available for a small donation.

I have a GX160 honda motor that @dobbslc can have for postage if he goes down this road

Wow thanks for the offer @roofman but I need one fairly quick to level off some temporary hard standing I've made for the winter.
I might go and have a look at one I've seen on marketplace but it's in the ULEZ and it really goes against my principles to pay that bxxxxxd Khan to drive on my own roads! Anyway,
I'm still thinking about a new Scheppach linked to about as it's not a bad price and free shipping.

If you are looking for second hand then join the Facebook page utilities lads and gangs. There are several companies on there that sell reconditioned tools for the utility sector. A reconditioned belle is couple of hundred quid and they usually have a choice of dozens. I would rather have a second hand big brand than new Chinese job. You will never visually see the difference in compaction rates but a better quality plate especially if heavier will compact thicker layers of material at a time and do so in less passes

Might be worth "whacking" another engine on, as its a genuine Wacker ? Might be an easy fix, which I suspect it will be.

I pretty well drove past that yesterday,!

I've got one!
It's a Dynapac IF72 with a Honda GX120 engine.


Oil is bad! but it starts easily and runs quietly.


I've done a couple of oil changes and it's coming out cleaner but it'll need more I think.

I also bought a couple of trestle's off him while I was there
