Unreal big huge red tool boxes. Just why...? And how much would you need to pay to get something that big...?

Part of the reason why boxes are so big is that mechanics have so many tools that used to be shared, like say one set of bearing pullers for the workshop... Then shared tools get abused, so its better for everyone to have their own and look after it.

No quite the opposite. What does it matter about holding it's value if it last you out. If you don't intend to sell it then it is worth nothing.
If it last you out then it's resale value is irrelevant. And I'm pretty sure people just say that to try and justify to themselves what they have spent. If you want snapon then fair enough buy snapon. But holding it's value if it's not for sale is kind of an oxymoron.

Look at it this way. Everything year on year goes up in price. Including snap on tool boxes. If you buy a decent one and look after it then it will hold its value very well as the new equivalent box prices will be going up every year and that is ultimately what they are compared against.

Buy a £150 halfrauds or Sealey set and it'll be worth FA let's face it. But a quality Snap On box should hold value very well and be a good investment.

if i spent the money what buys a snapon box

i can build far better and it would be far more securer than there crap boxes security wise

snapon is pinchable and thats due to the high prices on there gear

snapon has no second hand value what so ever as it cannot be replaced by snapons guarantee unless you buy from them

anyone else and snapon tools are the same value as the rest of the tools

what snapon do replace can and is stolen goods from other places

if anyone wants to harp on about how good the draw runners are you can buy better and more heavier duty drawer runners that snapon use for there drawer runners

Bumping this thread as relevant! I've always wanted a Snap on rollcab I think they do make the best ones. It would be a used one, I wouldn't pay the new truck price!

I am looking at this one. Seller asking £1900. Bear in mind I am from NI too where this stuff is also dearer. Is that too high - the prices are all over the place and seems OK price to me

Update, went to view this roll cab. Super quality, heavy duty and no issues at all. Deal done, collecting it mid week

Ill maybe fill this almost immediately but its a good starter Snap On box for me.

I have a Halfords Industrial 3-piece stack which has been excellent. Mine are the predecessors to the current generation which I don't think are quite as good. They have big wheels, but I've never tried to roll it around. I must have significantly more than my own body weight in it though.
I also bought this Kennedy box from Zoro a while back. It much much better quality than I was expecting for the price, really hefty wheels too and good supporting structure under the cabinet body.

Another vote for Halfords industrial.
Paid about £250 for my 3 piece set and they will last forever pretty much.
The soft close runners used on the Halfords advanced boxes which replaced the industrial range do fail quite quickly sometimes.

No, & that's the point @Agrismith & myself are making. If you buy something for yourself, with no intention of ever selling it, whether it's an investment or not is moot.

Its always nice to buy nice things that you want, hope you enjoy owning it. Id like one too but I have the tight gene which is getting tighter as I age.
Dont do what my brother did to his nice bright shiny MAC box. Tow bar sized dent right in the middle reversing in to his old garage.

That's a great tool box, my son has recently bought a similar one in Neon Green of all colours.

Nice to own and use quality kit imho, if you are using it every day might as well treat yourself.

I see a nice tool box. I buy it.

I don't see why points seem to need made over that..... its a tool box. I can sell it on again any time I wish and get most of my £ back and go again as needs change and time goes on.

they are scrap

whilst they are made very cheaply you pay a fortune for them

even if i bought the worst box going stripped everything out had it galvanised then fitted new roller bearings

id be quids in it as it would last longer than your snapon tool box

Back of every drawer will be bent where I got something stuck thats fell out the drawer above. Then I wrenched at the drawer to get what I want back out of it....

I always thought when you went to work - you should keep the overheads low and actually bring some money/wages home with you.

Not waste the profits on "pretty tool boxes"... Is this where I been going wrong all these years...?

I wanted one of those large st/st t/boxes but a price that was out of reach.....
then thought long and hard....
nice havin all them drawers etc but when u use at least 10x10mm spanners as many at 13 and again for 17 u soon run out of drawers and those spanner organiser's wont work with the above.....plus the full range of UNF spanners are mounted now.....
so this is the MK1......now everything better organised.....plus the full range of UNF spanners are mounted now.....
every thing to hand, on wheels and big drawers.....all the socket equip is in the small / tall Clark rollaway.....
yes it looks like poo but it cost nothing but time to make and it's in use every day.....and I dont care...
Just to say the two narrow \ thin drawers are used for screw drivers and pliers.....should have made em bigger....lol.....
all the drawers are running on skate board bearings, 6 per drawer....nice......

My Father was an agriculutral fitter then a garage owner - I still got his Canadian Ontario "Beach" tool box - in my domestic garage at home...

Nice thing in red - donkey years old - small - nice big alloy handles - roll cab - mid box - tiny topbox. All with drop down covers - I got the keys for it..

It just looks so small in "todays world" - more "machinist chest" than storage for a working "roadfitter"...

But Dad earnt his living with it/out of it - put food on the table for a growing family of three hungry kids.

And no I would not sell Dad's tool box - I have thou taken anything metric out it - taken the metric tools to my workshop and used them earning my money - that would please him no end. It also gives me lots of pleasure to use tools that belonged to my Dad - it really does...

But this comes from the man - who if he wants a longer 1/2" ratchet will hammer or weld a lump of pipe onto one rather than spend money on a snap on van

Second down in photo is Snap On ratchet...

I suppose the short length of stainless pipe I heated up and hammered onto it with 4lb lump hammer - allowed it to cool and shrink fit - has voided my "lifetime warranty"....
