I need a digital vernier but I don't want to spend mitutoyo money.

I have a genuine Mitutoyo. I also have one of the blue Chinese/Moore and Wright ones. I was treated to an expensive Swiss Teso digital vernier.
And my favourite? The blue Moore and Wright one!
Be warned though - they do 2 - both look the same but one is Polycarbonate and half the price. Around £60 for the one I have.

The MW one I've got is ''digitronic 110 DBL'' and is certainly made of metal, other than the blue housing round the display, it was £20 plus loose change, though a few years ago now.
Been very good for me. if stashing it for a while I just take the batt out.

I've had a Mitutoyo for quite a few years, wonderfully smooth feel to it.
Being me I dropped it and chipped the tip!
A very slight catch to it as it closes often spoils my concentration now.

I had a cutting oil brush and Mitutoyo calipers in the same hand and decided to oil the cutting tool on my lathe jamming the calipers into the chuck trapping them against the cutting tool, stapped the inside tips off and bent them a little, they are now digital calipers for scribing, they may even get another new life as a tailstock DRO in the future.

I did consider 2nd hand mitutoyo but there are so many fakes out there, I'm not taking that chance.

Tried many include M&W budget model ...u/s.....I got the Waterproof SHAHE 0-150mm Digital Caliper Vernier Coolant Proof IP54.....Whether accuracy is enough?

About 18 months ago, my trusty Mitutoyo caliper decided it had it's day & switched itself off for good. I couldn't moan (but did) because I'd had it for more years than I care to remember.

I found a company called Digital Micrometers ltd who trades as DML. I think they're in Sheffield. They do a huge range of measuring equipment.
I bought one if their own brand 8 inch calipers which is IP54 rated for around £40. I wasn't expecting much, but when it arrived I was pleasantly surprised at the quality of it, & how smooth it was.
I checked it against various standards I have, & against my Mitutoyo digital micrometer, & it was pretty much spot on!
It has nice large buttons that suits my big paws, & it's only on it's 2nd battery, & it's been used a lot.
I've since bought one if their 4 inch calipers, which is perfect for when I'm fiddling with carburettors.

A good caliper is pretty much all I, & most of us I expect require for the majority of machining jobs that we undertake. As I'm usually working to a couple of thou, which is .05mm to post decimal types.
Last weekend I made a stub axle for a bike trailer for someone. Where the bearings sat needed to be a tight sliding fit. So it was out with the Micrometer to get 'em a shade under a thou undersize. The rest of the shaft was measured using my caliper & it fitted perfectly.

No such thing as a 'digital' Vernier. Vernier scale caliper - yes. Digital caliper - yes. Digital Vernier - no. Vernier caliper with secondary digital display - yes.

Pedant mode OFF.

I thought they were shelf clamps. Digital shelf clamps don't get the same grip on the wood.

Old wise man once said to me , " If you want a nasty often painful surprise try putting tools or fingers into a moving chuck . "

Even now I still occasionally cringe when I drip a few drops of light oil off my big 8 inch long artists pigs hair brush on to the tool tip if it is close to the chuck . WD 40 is often my friend here.

we've all done this dance.........trying to find the unicorn, when it doesn't exist. unfortunately, in this space, you do get what you pay for.

and for me, probably like anyone else who is semi-serious about reliability, accuracy, and it just working when you need it, i coughed up the pain for a Mitutoyo, and its the best thing i ever done, if for the battery life if nothing else.
i now use the umpteen other calipers i bought over the years asuming/hoping it was going to do what the Mit does, as scribers and other stuff
