I have a few of the cheapy parkside ones and fine for 90% of what I do and dont care if they get dropped etc but i check them against a standard and they are surprisingly accurate for what they cost. The OP wants sub Mitutoyo price so under £100 but not cheapo far east one it really just depends how accurate you need it and reliably that does come at a cost . If your looking for 0.01mm accuracy its the wrong tool tbh even in one of the sites I work at that makes parts for the Euro fighter and Airbus Vernier calipers are graded as Indicators only and not to be used for accurate readings in production.
Regular calibration or checking against a known reference often is required if you really want to trust it

I'm with brad ive got an insize one which i really like, it's for internal grooves but get same idea.
I know you won't like it but can't beat mitutoyo. Has anyone tried the copied are they any good at all ? I don't need any as I seem to have them coming out of my ears but just intrested in opinions
Personally in work I've had a 300mm moore and right and it's lasted about 3 years before giving up and slide being off now and again funny enough it only plays up when I'm doing a really size critical part. So I've now ordered a 200mm mitutoyo to repalce couldn't stretch the wallet to a 300mm one haha

I had a set of the “new” blue style Moore and Wright that packed up after a fairly short while. To be fair they did travel a lot in a tool case on flights, thrown in the back of the car etc so they didn’t exactly y have the best life. I had to remove the battery as it would be flat within a week if I didn’t.
I replaced them with a cheap parkside set from Lidl, and I wasn’t expecting a great deal - they feel a bit rough and ready but compared to a micrometer they come out amazingly accurate for a £15 set. They have been on the same battery for a few years now, I don’t bother removing it but it’s still going after probably 4-5 years of infrequent use. Amazing really, but as you rightly say it’s luck of the draw whether they have them in or whether you get a good set. Lidl warranty helps, I believe it’s pretty decent but can’t say I’ve had cause to use it.

Bought my lad an all stainless Moore & Wright Basic at Christmas 2021. Mainly for his 3D printing works. A shade under £40 then with 20% off. From Zoro. Still going string. It auto offs too which is handy.

£44 for 0.1mm resolution? That's outrageous.
I inspected one of these and it was pretty good for the money. Smooth action and read exactly the same as my Mitutoyo.

I have a genuine Mitutoyo. I also have one of the blue Chinese/Moore and Wright ones. I was treated to an expensive Swiss Teso digital vernier.
And my favourite? The blue Moore and Wright one!
Be warned though - they do 2 - both look the same but one is Polycarbonate and half the price. Around £60 for the one I have.

I got two verniers - Mitutoyo dial gauge and a Swiss Tesa dial gauge.
I also got one cheap digital Oxford vernier - does say coolant proof on it. Think I paid £25 quid for it - it does work and seems accurate - but I don't use it...

I have found that the cold seems to kill batteries, I have a mitutoyo calliper at home not used very often kept in my unheated workshop and one at work kept in my roller box used everyday (warm factory) I replace batteries at home about twice as often than as work.
As well as this the work one is newer and don’t feel as nice as my older home one both the same model.
Most of the generic cheap calliper’s seem to be quite impressively accurate but just don’t feel as nice to use.

I've got an older moore and wright (before they were blue) its OK, does the job. I also have a Tesa, which is much nicer.
Both are quite old so no idea how they compare to modern units.
If I was getting a new one I'd probably go for Insize, couldn't bring myself to spend out on a Mitutoyo new at RRP, and far to risky to buy a cheap/second hand one due to the number of fakes.
I've also got a selection of dial ones, which I use quite often.
