I need a bright spark…. or two

Hi all..

Before anyone says it, yes, i’ve been a bit stupid here without doubt, for i had this decent bench grinder ( not an expensive one ) that was working fine but then got a more powerful one, anyway, removed from the bench putting masking tape on the wiring with the connections all marked up only to store it away for years and now having a use for it again find the writing has faded to nothing, can’t read it at all..

So, anyone have a clue how to wire this little chap up?

I’ve got a choice of two 230v switches a 4 terminal on/off rocker switch and a 6 terminal push on and off switch..

The bench grinder wiring is all sheathed as one and have two reds one black and one blue..

Normal 230volt supply obv live neutral and earth ..

Normally little electric jobs don’t faze me but this one has somewhat tbh, it’s the two reds coming out of the motor that’s confusing me, the blue i guess is the neutral and the black ?

Your help would be appreciated so thank you…

I think? it was a Toolzone or similar mte.. I’ve looked for wiring diagrams but had no luck yet.. It’s spec label is awol too which ain’t helping neither …

My Mrs says it was one of these which she bought me one Birthday which fell apart within weeks… And i think annoyingly she’s rite again..

do you have a meter to check the windings?

as a total guess, I'd say the two red sires are center taps s it can be run from 230v or 110v so.....

black positive, blue negative and join the 2 red wires together


but check with a mater first :-)

Thanks for that .. yes i have a flashy new meter.. Are you able to advise me how to check the windings.. is it a resistance check with the ohmmeter?

I would assume that it’s on the metallic chassis.
It would serve no purpose to have an earth termination on an insulated switch module.

One of the "lives" might be connected to a start coil or a capacitor perhaps ?

if it's a start coil you should lose continuity on one red cable to blue cable when the motor is spun fast enough for centrifugal switch.

The earth is connected to the welding table underneath the metal clamp that’s holding the motor securely to the bench whilst i’m working on it..

I may have misunderstood but is there a good reason why you have not connected the appliance’s earth directly to the appliance chassis itself?

You've got a capacitor hence the additional wires.

There’s normally no centrifugal switch in these, just a run cap. Surprised it spun up without - I assume there are no wheels attached yet.

4 terminal switch is the one you want, assuming it’s the double pole type. Looking at your pic, going clockwise from the left-hand terminal, it would be Lin, Lout, Nout, Nin.

To make sure of the 4 grinder motor wires (and the switch), you need a multimeter. If you haven’t got one, get one.

Always connect the earth - there’ll be a tag provided somewhere.
