I must be missing something!

Hi, just bought and in the process of setting up my portamig 215. I purchased a gas bottle from hobbie weld and have a problem setting up the gas.

I turned the black and blue knob on the regulator initially to clear the airway ( i assume this is gas coming directly under the knob) . Connected everything up as shown - the only way to get gas flowing ( indicated on the meter) is to turn the same knob ( but the problem is - this causes gas to escape just under the knob as before ). There are no visible leaks of air from the connector between both the regulator gas bottle and meter.

It may be something really simple that i've missed or me just not understanding how to hook the gas up properly but we'll see....

Not sure if it may be something to do with that bottle being best used with a side entry regulator?

Hi, Sounds like the gland on the spindle is leaking, take it back because it will romp through the gas in no time flat.

The black and blue know is the valve for the bottle. You need to make sure the bull nose of clean and the bottle hole is clean. They also need to be tight. Check the connection and twist the regulator in the hole.
Re fit and tighten up. 27. Or 28 mm spanner usually fit. The regulator will pass the gas so you need 5o connect to the welder first. Opening the valve will allow the gas out and the needle on the regulator should go to 200 bar or whatever the fill pressure is and no hissing. If it's hissing you have a leak at 200bar. The gas will try to get out at that pressure.
The know on the regulator, the horizontal one, regulates to gas flow and the other dial should read about 10 lpm depending on what you are welding.

I had no issues connecting BOC cylinders but when I got my rent free cylinder (not hobbyweld) I also struggled to stop it leaking but the cleaning the bull nose and the hole it goes in to let me make a non hissing connection eventually

What you must do every time you stop a welding session is to turn the blue/black knob off otherwise your gas will disappear faster than you will like

yup they are very leaky at times. ALWAYS TURN OFF THE GAS AT THE BOTTLE
