Seeing your set of radius gauges takes me back to BET - basic engineering training - as an aircraft mechanic and then Technician in the RAF. Weeks spent standing over a vice patiently filing...

I still make things that could be done on my machines but its good practice to do things with a hand file very accurately with a bit of patience
most people don't even know what draw filing is

IN BET one of the things we had to do was to make a flat, square rectangular steel block. It was then drilled with various sized holes. Some of the holes had to be reamed and some of them tapped. We then had to make studs to thread into the tapped holes.
All using hand tools, marking out using a surface gauge on a big surface plate. Some of the tools we used, in the late 80's, the surface gauges and the vee blocks, had been there since the 20's when Trenchard set up No1 SofTT at Halton.
My 18 year old self looked at the square flat rectangular piece of steel and thought it didn't look too bad a thing to make. I had already had some little engineering experience. Not too bad until the instructor, Corporal Eyles, handed each of us the worst looking pieces of mild steel I think I've ever seen, they were all but round bars. We found the files in the toolkit and got on. I definitely know what draw filing is.

how about doing a burt munroe and using a bicycle spoke cut down as a bore comparitor . would be x thou per half turn

Amazing man: building world record holding bikes on a Myford ML7 with a cut down bed so he could machine flywheels.
Just had a wee read of http://www.performanceforums.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-67298560.html he originally made cams with a file and a saw!

We had the opposite in our first year, one lad was from a family who restored classic cars, bikes etc. so he was already well skilled using handtools, lathes, millers etc. The first project was a centre finder and when he presented an absolutely accurate well made finder for marking the lecturer refused to mark it with the comment "I've heard about you lad, you've probably made it at home using facilities not available to the other apprentices". Even protests from the rest of us saying we had watched him make it wouldn't sway him
On a side note he was one of 3 brothers and as each reached teenager their father would give them a box of bits and expect them to build a bike capable of being MOT'd & shown as a "trade test"
