I may have a measuring obsession...

After seeing Parm's new height gauge I had a look at some of my measuring equipment. Most was purchased with a steel cabinet from the experimental departmental when my old employer closed down that I paid £40 for. Then a few additions over the years:

I suspect I may have to stop as have most of what I think I need. I have a small granite surface table too.

Are they Shardlow/Tesa bore mic's?
If so then I rate them the most out of all the ones I have, Mitutoyos a close second.

Don't really rate Bowers, certainly not the ones I have had but they were all second hand. I do have one that is almost new and it is ok but not a patch on the Tesa or Mitutoyos. Obviously just my opinion though.

yes Tesa - we were a hydraulic manufacturer, so needed accurate measurements, we used lots of air gauging.

True, the Mitutoyo digital caliper does 90% of what I need to measure, for engine rebuilds internal and external micrometers plus plastigauges.....

Must admit I do need one of those smaller internal mic sets....would be nice to have a matching imperial and metric sets

All depends what you do, for me everything pictures would be at least a once a week tool, apart from the sine bar. To much maths voodoo for me.

I love metrology gear too. I dislike how much quality gear costs though.

It's essential gear, without it the lathe and mill are pretty useless.

Expensive things they are too, i was watching some on fleabay and they went for hundreds. Always wanted a set of slip gauges too, even though i don't really have any work for them. How makes/sells a decent granite surface plate for not daft money ?

Very true. I was comparing a bearing outer race, brand new so i knew 100% what the size was, with my mitutoyo mic's against the mitutoyo digital calipers, and they both gave the same reading spot on.

Yikes, I just searched on ebay and there is one set of Tesa bore mics for £600! I could count on one hand the number of times i have used them in the last 15 years..... sort of sentimental value from when I was Chief Engineer for the department where they were used.

I was lucky enough to pick most of mine up at reasonable prices, paid about £200 for a Mitutoyo set of 50mm to 100mm.

I use the telescoping gauges and an ordinary external micrometer, it works well enough i suppose, for bore measurements. What brands do you like ? I love Starrett stuff apart from their micrometers for some reason, when buying mic's i always go for mitutoyos.
