I have just purchased a Boxford Lathe

Best ones travel with the carriage. Mind not seen any like that for years

Had that on the Student, didn't like it so fitted it to the back of the chuck. Coolant doesn't tend to get slung from round bars but when you get near the chuck the jaws soon fling it. Face off something close to the chuck and shower time.

but would you really want one you would have to put up with them in a workplace but no chance in a private workshop

I bought one for the Boxford. What a pain in the **** it is to use. It just gets in the way.

How so?
The one I have flips up out of the way when not needed and flips down when in use.
This is what the Triumph one is like, probably have better pics but this is the first I found.

Mines like that on my Boxford model A metric lathe,

Flips down when using suds,
my lathe came with a 3 phase suds pump, which I converted to single phase and put it in a plastic box, so I can use it on my milling machine.

A few advantages of flood coolant are

Easier to hit sizes due to limited thermal expansion.
Provides lubrication for drills/inserts etc.
Aids in achieving a good surface finish
Can make inserts and drills stay sharp longer.
Can help flush out chips when drilling and boring.

Disadvantage of flood.
Messy.

anything you can restrict the flow with and if it wont put a bypass tap and pipe in in to return the excess to the tank

Nothing beats a proper suds pump but I have used small pond pumps before on some projects.

Yes, I have also used a central heating pump before, it was on my very first big lathe and it worked well.

cheap pond pump will work fine provided you have a decent filter in to re circulate or just use as gallon can drip feed from above the work

Just collect the coolant below in another can and drop feed from above
