Other than this year (vehicle problems) I usually spend a lot of long weekends camping with the TEOC car club throughout the year. At most meets we search out pubs that have a strong contingent of local micro brewery offerings on tap. Even the Tan Hill pub (highest in England and one of the most remote) can serve a decent array. Marston's Pedigree and most IPA's 'on tap' are now making a welcome return seriously undercutting the effective monopolies of the big, collective breweries. What is not widely known is that a small/micro brewery can receive a very helpful reduction in alcohol duty to help offset the relatively higher overheads that low volume production engenders.

Overall I tend to prefer English Ales over most lagers. The ones with their own characteristic flavours such as 'Old Speckled hen', 'Old Peculiar', dark milds or Irish stouts (excluding Guiness which I find too dry). The only thing is that after a few weeks I 'go off' them and have to try something else. Currently this alternative is 'Brasserie' beer (4.4% abv) in 250ml bottles from Aldi. The bottle size is perfect for a pint of lager snakebite by topping up the glass with Aldi's own 'Taurus' apple cider (5% abv). One or two of these, straight from the fridge, makes an excellent refresher on a hot day or to wash down my dinner.

Nursy surprises me now and again (usually when she wants something ) with random beers that she finds whilst out shopping. Some are a bit so-so (Doombar, Bluebird) whilst others are fantastic (Broadside, Old Peculier)... every now and then she finds some oddball I've never heard of that turns out to be bloody lovely: the latest such is '1698' by Shepherd Neame. Thoroughly recommended

We get Old Crafty Hen and Hobgoblin these days, nice drinks both of them. Shepherd Neame definitely do some nice brews.
