After getting my compressor to go by placing a heater in front of it around mid-day, I thought I would have a go at doing some flowers or something to use up some off cuts. I started making a rose and went to use the angle grinder. It wouldn't work. So after the usual shaking, followed by tapping, then hitting I started to strip it down. I thought I would put the volt meter on the switch to see if there was juice getting there, that was fine, so it wasn't the lead. I undone the screws to release the mains lead from the switch, so I could check the wires leaving the switch when I grabbed the ends of the lead I had left it plugged in the socket! Damn did it give a whallop, followed by a numb arm and all my insides on edge!

best one i've heard in a while, a mate was making an extension lead from cable off a reel, put the plug on one end and without thinking plugged it in and switched it on he then proceeded to cut the cable to length, you can guess what happened

I was cutting some cables out of the roof space a few years ago year. They came from a consumer unit that wasn't used and was never switched on. I checked it wasn't switched on and put gaffer tape over it before going up there. Guess what - by the time I got up there a few minutes later someone had switched it on. I recall there had been a brief power cut and someone had tried all the options.

try being on site with painters! they put all the switchers on! I always teach apprentices to lock of the supply or disconnect the supply end first.

a couple of months ago i was fitting a new bathroom light pull swith and lights (house refurb) all done i fitted the bulb, flicked the switch board thing on and went to check if it worked, it didnt so i decided to get the meter out and check if voltage was going to the switch but the switch was full of debris from the ceiling, so i grabbed the quickest thing to hand (a big flathead screwdriver) and prodded around, turns out - the wires were live and i shorted them out with the screwdriver and they exploded it, i sh*t meself and fell off the stepladders, turns out in the end that the bulb was fked

Absolutely - I turn all the lights and radio on and then turn the supply to the whole house off these days. If the lights and radio come on you know someone has been fiddling.

You can't beat having the fuses in your pocket, unfortunately everything is MCB's today!

We had a sparkey out last month to find out why our fan oven was popping the trip with a large bang when switched on. Turns out that when our house was built about 15 years ago, some muppet had left the supply cable trapped under the edge of the oven casing. Over the years, the vibrations from the fan had cut through the insulation. 35 of your ingleesh pounds, and it was all sorted.

Then I replaced the broken door.
